Title I @ Teasley
October 2024 News
October is here!
Did you know? The meaning of October comes from the Latin word Octo which means eight (8). In ancient times, the calendar started in March, so October was the eighth month. Why is this important? Because English has many words with Latin and Greek roots due to the influence of these languages on the English language since the Renaissance period.
Latin is especially prevalent in scientific and technical vocabulary, where over 90% of words have Latin roots. Familiarity with Greek and Latin roots, as well as prefixes and suffixes, can help our students understand the meaning of new words. And learning new words is how our students increase their fluency and Lexile.
Lexile
Lexile refers to a student's reading ability or the difficulty of text. The more words your student knows, the more complex text they can read and understand, the higher the Lexile.
Prefixes
are letters or groups of letters added to the beginning of a word to make a new word. Brainstorm with your student all the words that start with prefixes. Below are some samples, click here for more:
re - indicates "again, or back"
remarry, redo, rejoin, regain, rewrite, recalculate
dis - indicates "not, or opposite of"
disobey, disable, disappear, disrespect, discomfort, discredit
Suffixes
are letters or groups of letters added to the end of a word to make a new word. Brainstorm with your student all the words that end with suffixes. Below are some samples. Click here for more.
less - indicates "without or lacking"
homeless, fearless, useless, pointless, harmless
full - indicates "full of or will fill something"
forgetful, hopeful, powerful, faithful, painful

How many cans are in the entire display?
If I purchase 10 boxes, how much will I be saving for the entire purchase?
How much will I be saving per can if I purchase 10 boxes?
What shape are they arranged in?
Can they be arranged in other shapes?
OCTOBER LEARNING
What our 6th graders are learning:
Practice this with your student by engaging in a debate conversation. Have your student use the "Claim, Evidence, Reasoning" framework. Here is an example:
Claim - Our family likes Gala apples better than any other type of apples.
Evidence - the student needs to research/state what evidence supports this claim. Perhaps, Gala apples are eaten quicker in the home, than any other type.
Reasoning - students make sure the evidence can support the claim.
