Troop 89 Receives a $1000 grant for camping supplies
Troop 89 Receives a $,1000 grant for camping supplies.
-by Mr. Sri Krishnamurthy
Troop 89 was recently awarded a grant of $1,000 through the Hillsborough Rewards Program, along with twelve other local non-profit organizations. This grant is made available annually by Hillsborough Rewards Credit Card Program sponsored by Affinity Federal Credit Union and Hillsborough Township. The process involves an elaborate application process that needs to be submitted to the Program Committee with a list of items that are needed by an organization, with competitive price invoices and justification. Based on the review process selected Township-based non-profit, senior or youth organizations are selected for grants up to $2,000.
Our troop created a sub-committee made up by Mr. Singh, Mr. Patel, Mr. Devakate, Mr. Gupta and Mr. Krishnamurthy, to work on this grant application. The sub-committee researched over several weeks and created a list of camping and supplies to support the application process. The awarded $ 1,000 will help the troop to purchase much needed supplies and replace old camping gear.
Representatives from the selected organizations were present at the Oct. 15 Township Committee meeting to accept the ceremonial check presented by Mayor Robert Britting, the Hillsborough Township Committee, and the Rewards Program Advisory Committee members. Troop 89 was represented by over 20 scouts and adults showing their scout spirit.
Rocket Launch
Rocket Launch
-by Samarth
The rocket launch event is an event we do annually and it’s a fun packed event for all the scouts in our troop and any new scouts who are interested in joining. This year the rocket launch event was lead by me (Samarth) and Rohan. There’s a lot of planning that goes into this event from ordering all the materials to booking the site for the launch. The first thing we do is order the rocket kits and engines. Then we plan 2 meetings for scouts to work on their rockets. Then finally after the scouts are done building we launch the final rockets. This year there were many rockets that went really high in the sky while on the other hand, some plummeted down and crashed. This years event went well overall but there was one main thing we could have done better and that is being more careful when trying to catch the rockets. Some scouts were running in blindly which was really dangerous because there was one instance where a kid almost got hit in the head by the rocket so it is good to wait until the parachute deploys and then go chase the rocket. But overall the event this year was fun and I hope everyone is looking forward to next years rocket launch!
Jersey 360 Jamboree
Next, we have Jersey 360 Jamboree
by Yatharth G.
On October 17-19, eight Scouts and three adults from Troop 89, led by me, embarked on a fun-filled journey to the Jersey 360 Jamboree in Augusta, New Jersey. We had two patrols that cooked amazing foods such as burgers, pancakes, and quesadillas. To start the event, the staff held a great opening ceremony where Scouts competed in numerous challenges. Not to mention, there were countless activities, including an awesome BMX bike show and bouncy horse racing. A wide selection of merit badges was offered to Scouts, including Fly Fishing, American Business, and Entrepreneurship. We also had a blast participating in supervised archery, BB gun shooting, and drone racing. Another highlight was when the Scouts witnessed a Black Hawk aircraft take off and had the opportunity to sit inside. During our free time, we got turbans tied on us, watched some relaxing horseback riding, and learned about many cool and unique things! To finish the event, the Jamboree staff brought in Anthony Salazar, a magician who amazed everyone watching. The last activity for the Scouts was attending a rave, where many songs were played. All in all, we had a blast!
