NYSED & OBEWL Updates
ENL and Bilingual Teacher Leadership Consortium (TLC)
The ENL and Bilingual Teacher Leadership Consortium (TLC) is an opportunity for ENL and Bilingual Education Teachers to learn from one another, discuss best practices, and hear about the latest updates from OBEWL and NYSED. There will be opportunities to ask questions of Associate Commissioner Elisa Alvarez.
It will take place on Thursday, January 30, 2025, from 3:30-4:30pm. Pre-registration is required. The zoom link will be sent out upon registration.
CTLE Credit to meet the language acquisition requirement, will be awarded. For questions please email obewl@nysed.gov(link sends e-mail).
STEM Incentive Program for Aspiring Teachers
The New York State STEM Incentive Program application opened on December 1. The STEM program provides full-tuition scholarships for eligible students pursuing approved studies in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) at a SUNY or CUNY college. Newcomer Toolkit Webinar
Join us for a comprehensive webinar series on ED’s OELA Newcomer Toolkit. Part 3 of the series will focus on research and practices that support access to high-quality instruction and outcomes for newcomer students, aligning with Chapter 4 of the Newcomer Toolkit.
Presentations will highlight both research and practice perspectives. Panelists will share data on the characteristics of newcomers in New York and practices related to high school graduation, share new findings from an Institute of Education Sciences-funded study on longitudinal outcomes of newcomer students and factors that mediate those outcomes, provide information about effective newcomer-specific literacy curricula, and detail a planning tool school districts use to chart a pathway for high school graduation for newcomer students who arrive in the secondary grades.

CTLE Course Immigration in Secondary Schools
Sign up for CUNY-IIE’s upcoming virtual CTLE Course, "Immigration in Secondary Schools"! This module is designed to assist educators in exploring and identifying what advocacy can look like in our schools and classrooms. Participants will learn strategies to help immigrant students access college and career opportunities and to promote immigrant youth empowerment both within and beyond school settings.
Educators will earn a total of fifteen (15) CTLE credits upon successful completion of the module. The sessions will be held on:
- Monday, January 27, 6:00pm-8:30pm (on Zoom)
- Monday, February 3, 6:00pm-8:30pm (on Zoom)
- Monday, February 10, 6:00pm-8:30pm (on Zoom)
The course includes an additional 6.5 hours of asynchronous group and independent work.

Immigrant Rights in New York by the New York Immigration Coalition: a guide for New York immigrants on avoiding immigration scams, protecting families when interacting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and creating an emergency preparedness plan. Available in English, Spanish, and French.
Know Your Rights Red Cards
Know Your Rights Red Cards by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center: these cards assist people in asserting their rights and defending themselves against ICE. Available in 16 languages.
UNIDO 5 Recommendations for K-12 Schools to Support Immigrant Students
Educator's Immigration Resource
Author Greg Cunningham, who came to Mid-West RBERN in the fall of 2023 to present on immigration law has a new resource to share. He recently created a website full of information on certain myths surrounding immigrants, as well as a brief history of laws impacting the education of non-citizen/non-native English-speaking students. Additionally, there is a section on recently passed immigration legislation.
