Practice activities that help them slow down and regulate their emotions.
Family Conflict Strategies
Here are some ideas to help with Family Conflict and finding strategies to resolve the conflicts.
- Stop speaking in anger. Take time to cool off before continuing conversations.
- Consider if the issue is really worth fighting over. Don't get caught up in arguments over trivial things.
- Separate the person from the problem. Try to look at the heart of the matter objectively and discuss it, rather than making things personal.
- Understand the the goal is to resolve conflict, not win the fight.
- Don't interrupt during a discussion. Let everyone complete their thoughts and listen.
- Keep an even calm tone and use your indoor voice. Shouting makes everyone defensive and raises stress levels.
- Use "I" statements when conveying to other how you feel. "I feel mad when...."
- Ask questions to clarify and understand what is being said.
- Stay focused on the matter at hand. Don't bring up the past or go off topic.
- Brainstorm solutions together.
- Stick to the solutions and follow through with them.
