Week one!
What I've Learned
I received a text from a staff member after 6pm halfway through the week. The text starts off with "I want you to know what goes on behind the scenes..." It goes on to share that a teacher saw a student tripping over his shoes that were too big, so during a break, the teacher ran to the store and came back with two new pairs of shoes for our little guy. He was rockin' those shoes throughout the rest of the day. This particular student had a lot on his mind this week, so the teacher designed an individual writing prompt for him. This helped him express his feelings and not be so preoccupied with them, so he could focus on learning.
In another instance, I mentioned out loud that a student needed a lunchbox. In a few hours, there was a lunchbox on my desk. The mysterious gift had a note but no signature.
Midweek I had two strangers from the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) drop off: snacks, treats, learning materials, and socks with other materials for the nurse to give out to needing students.
District and school staff worked here throughout the weekend to enable our office technology, remove brush from the yard, replace ceiling tiles, and get us set for you all.
And your babies, your kiddos, your soon-to-be middle schoolers--well...they make me smile every day. Thank you for creating such amazing children. I went to give a student a high five today, and he said, "I want to give you a high five, but I don't want to give you a high five. I'm not feeling so hot, and I don't want you to get sick."
Stories are often better than words, and my heart is full. So, I'll leave you with these stories that speak the ethos of this place we get to call...Sunny Hill.

Summer Learning!
If your student worked on Summer Math Workbooks or Summer Reading Postcards, have your child bring it in for a special reward from their teacher!
Bath, Books, and Bed!
It is time to get back into those summer routines! Please develop a home routine that prioritizes learning. Bathing, then reading (at least 20 minutes a day), and then bed time is one great routine. Experts recommend 9-12 hours of sleep for elementary aged students.
Start your bedtime routine at 7pm or 7:30pm!
Drop Off and Pick Up
No pets are allowed on school grounds, so please leave those cuties at home!
Reminders: 1) Please walk your student to school if possible. 2) A bike rack is around back. 3) Morning drop off begins at 7:40am. 4) Afternoon pickup begins at 2:40pm. 5) On Wednesdays, it is 2:10pm. 6) Early release days pick up is at 10:45am. 7) Kinder parents need to park your car in a parking spot and get out to get your student.
Free Preschool Opportunity
Opus Montessori School in Barrington Hills is offering free preschool for a few select applicants. Apply here. Learn more here.
Doctor's Note
If your student is absent due to a doctor's appointment, we require a doctor's note. Please ensure that your student brings this note upon their return to school. If a doctor's note is not provided, we have to mark the absence as unexcused.
MAP/FastBridge Testing
We will be assessing students using MAP and FastBridge starting next week through September 13. This helps us better understand your student's skills, so we can best meet their needs.
Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)
We will be hosting elections for our PTO. Please stay tuned for more information regarding this. If you are interested in partnering with our school community, please let your teachers know when you see them for Meet the Teacher or Back to School Night! You can also express your interest here.
