Sand Lake Lions Roar
OCTOBER 2024
A Letter from the Principal
Dear Sand Lake Families,
Many of you will spend this weekend raking leaves, preparing for winter, and thinking about all of the winter activities we enjoy here in Alaska. Along with those and many other items, teachers will be preparing for Parent Teacher Conferences on October 23rd and 24th. This time has been set aside so that your child’s teacher can share academic progress, goals and concerns, and you will also have time to see some of your child’s work.
Your participation is an important part of this process, and we are looking for 100% of our families to attend Parent/Teacher Conferences. Our Conference Scheduler will be open on October 15th, so visit our website at asdk12.org/sandlake to schedule a conference.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are an opportunity for you to ask your child’s teacher questions.
Following are a couple questions you could use to get a dialogue started.
1. What are my child's strengths and weaknesses? What are some examples of each strength or weakness?
2. What are some of the upcoming subjects the students will be studying, and how might we support these units from home?
3. Does my child speak up or ask questions during class, or in any of the classroom activities?
While you’re in the building during conferences, I hope you’ll be able to stop by the library and visit our annual Book Fair. Mr. Grenier, our librarian, has been busy getting ready, and your purchase goes a long way in keeping our catalog up to date.
We are all looking forward to seeing all of our Sand Lake families during Parent Teacher Conferences.
If you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact us at

Sincerely,
Linson Thompson
Principal, Sand Lake Elementary

Hello Sand Lake Parents!
My name is Jennifer Burkholder and I am Sand Lake’s Counselor.
This year is off and running and I thought it would be good to share a little about who I am and how I provide services for your children.
I’m a born and raised Alaskan who graduated from ASD. I attended four years of college out of state at Western Washington University, then returned to Anchorage to attend graduate school at Alaska Pacific University. I graduated in 2000 with a Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology. In the midst of it all, I met my husband of twenty-four years and together we have two daughters, both graduates of ASD and who are now both in college.
I’ve worked with children within a variety of settings a little over 30 years, but the last 15 years, I’ve worked as an elementary school counselor within ASD. As your child’s school counselor, I facilitate Social Emotional Learning classroom lessons, groups, lunch bunches, and/or student 1x1s. Students are welcome to request 1x1 appointments with me via completion of a referral form on my door or by teacher referral. I look forward to building relationships and getting to know your kiddos.
Questions and concerns are welcomed so please do not hesitate to call or leave a message.
Lastly, I provide counseling services at two elementary schools, so I am only at Sand Lake part-time, but my schedule is posted on my door and certainly the front office knows my schedule as well.
When you’re in the building feel free to stop by my office and say Hi.

From our School Nurse...
Hello Sand Lake Families, Health screenings at school have begun and photo-screening (vision screenings) with Lion’s Club volunteers is scheduled for October 21st. This will include students in grades K-2, some students in grades 3 and 5, and all new to district students. If your child is supposed to be wearing glasses at school, please remind them to bring and wear them every day.
More about photoscreening can be found at this link: https://www.aapos.org/glossary/photoscreening
If you have questions about any particular school health screenings, please check the link below or feel free to contact me. School nurses are required to check height, weight, vision, and hearing at certain ages per ASD policy in accordance with state law. https://www.asdk12.org/Page/7941
