Armed Forces Commitment Ceremony
Congratulations to our 19 Seniors who committed to the United States Armed Forces! Marion L. Steele honored these students at our annual Armed Forces Commitment Ceremony on Friday, May 3rd. Click this link to view pictures from this incredible event!
Academic Challenge Team
Congratulations to our MLS Academic Team of Aiden Workman, Mark Vitelli, and Mort Wilson who won the WEOL Scholasic Games Championship last weekend! The Academic Team is led by advisors Mrs. Durdak and Mrs. Kremer. Job well done!
Underclassmen Chromebooks
Please be aware that chromebooks will not be collected for underclassmen this year. Students will be taking their chromebooks home for summer. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the main office at 440-988-4433.

You Do You Day
Marion L. Steele will be having our second annual "You Do You" day on May 24th. Students will be receiving a Google Form to Sign Up for four different activities to participate in. Activities are based on teacher interests and feature a wide range of exciting offerings. We are looking forward to staff members sharing their outside interests and talents with our students. Some examples of offerings include: musical jam sessions, pickle ball, line dancing, self care, and many more!
Students will receive a schedule in the upcoming weeks for the day, please see the bell schedule below.
PaySchool Central-Student Lunch Balances
As the school year winds down, please monitor your child(ren)'s lunch account(s) to make sure they have enough money to purchase breakfast &/or lunch. You can add funds, as well as monitor their account(s) at www.payschoolscentral.com. Please have all negative balances paid, and funds available on their accounts, before May 17th. Your child(ren)'s balance will roll over to next school year, so any remaining funds will be on their account at the beginning of the 2024-25 school year. If your child is a Senior, they must pay off any negative balance before they receive their cap and gown.

Class of 2024
Senior Finals
The class of 2024 will be taking exams on Monday, May 20th and Tuesday, May 21st. Students will follow a normal bell schedule for exams. On Monday, May 20th exams will be administered for fifth, sixth, and seventh period. On Tuesday, May 21st students will take exams in first, second, third, and fourth period. Students will then be released from school after their fourth period class on May 21st. Seniors will return their school issued chromebook in the North Gym (MPR) before leaving the building.
Class of 2024 Graduation Details
The Marion L. Steele High School class of 2024 plans to hold its Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 25th at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center beginning at 10:00 am.
All students participating in commencement must attend the mandatory graduation practice on May 23rd. Please review the Class of 2024 Graduation Details for further information.
Please keep in mind that all school fees need to be paid in full in order to receive your cap and gown and to receive your diploma. Please contact Mrs. Doehr, financial secretary, if you need to set up a payment plan. She can be reached at 440-988-1422.

Yearbook Sales: Last Chance to Buy a 2023-2024 Yearbook
May 31st is the deadline to buy a yearbook for this school year. You can order by going to Jostens.com, searching Marion L. Steele High School, and that will take you to a page for everything Jostens at Steele. Don't forget to check out the personalization and icon upgrades!
We do not order extra yearbooks, so the only way to guarantee a yearbook is to preorder your student a copy today. If you want to double check if you have already ordered a yearbook, please call Jostens at 877.767.5217. Jostens can look up your account by your email or phone number and double check for you.

Underclassmen Awards Ceremony
Marion L. Steele High School will be holding its Academic Awards Ceremony for underclassmen who have earned an Academic Award Letter on Wednesday, May 22nd in the cafetorium. Freshman awards begin at 8:00 am, sophomores at 9:00 am and juniors at 10:00 am. Students who qualify for the Academic Awards Ceremony will be notified by mail. If you have any questions regarding the ceremony, please contact your school counselor.
Parents and/or guardians are invited to attend this ceremony. The ceremony will also be streamed live on the CometsLive YouTube channel.
In order to qualify for an award letter, the following criteria must be met:
9th grade after the first semester 3.65 Cumulative GPA
10th grade after the third semester 3.60 Cumulative GPA
11th grade after the fifth semester 3.50 Cumulative GPA
2024-2025 Student Schedules
Student schedules for the 2024-2025 school year will be available to view beginning on May 30th in PowerSchool Parent Portal.
To view your schedule, log into your ParentPortal account via the website (schedules are not available to view in the ParentPortal app) and click on “Next Year Schedule”. Please note a student’s schedule will only be changed to correct an incomplete schedule or to meet graduation requirements. If you have any questions about your schedule, please contact your school counselor. Late Arrival, Early Release and Open Campus applications will be available for upperclassmen in the fall.

Third Annual Career Fair
Our third annual Career Fair was a huge success! Thank you to the 35 plus vendors who came out to support our students and our Steele staff for leading our students!
Senior Awards Banquet
Congratulations to our Class of 2024 academic award recipients and scholarship winners. These were recognized at our annual Senior Awards Banquet held on May 7th at German's Villa. Thank you to all of our scholarship donors, Board of Education members, the Amherst School Educational Foundation, and our MLS faculty for making this event possible!
Requesting Final High School & LCCC Records & Transcripts
Seniors, as you wrap up the school year, this is a reminder to please log in to Naviance to ensure you selected your attending college, which ensures your final high school transcript is sent to set college. Also, if you have participated in any dual enrollment college-credit plus courses through LCCC you will need to take the steps to have your LCCC transcript sent to the college. CCP Courses for the Summer Semester at LCCC
Students who registered for summer CCP classes through LCCC, please be aware the term starts on Monday, May 20th, 2024, if you are taking 10-week courses. 8-week courses will start on June 3rd, and 7-week courses will start on June 10th. Students are responsible for checking their course confirmation email from Mrs. Karen Tomcko, which includes information on the course, book ordering instructions, student resources, etc. If you have any questions, please see your school counselor.

Taste of History Volunteering
Mr. Mike Edwards and Mrs. Emily Marty had some students volunteer this weekend for the upcoming 'Taste of History' event hosted by the Amherst Historical Society. They helped design signs and build “checkpoint” stations.
More Volunteer Opportunities
Need Volunteer Opportunities to meet Ohio's Graduation Requirements for 2024-25? The teachers within the Marion L. Steele Social Studies Department can help! Students can accumulate volunteer hours to show readiness and earn a community service seal. Students are encouraged to stop by a social studies teacher's classroom or send an email to learn how to get involved.

Voter Registration
Students can count on the Social Studies Department to help them register to vote! There are voter registration forms located in junior and senior classrooms. Registration requirements for elections include:
* being a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on or before the day (T, 11-5-24) of the general election (please note: 17-year-olds who will turn 18 by the date of the general election can register now!)
* a resident of Ohio for at least 30 days immediately before the election
* registered to vote at least 30 days before the election. (If you have recently moved to Ohio, you must file a new registration form).
Citizens can also register to vote online through the Ohio Secretary of State's website https://olvr.sos.state.oh.us/ or go to the Lorain County Board of Elections webpage mhttps://www.voteloraincountyohio.gov/
Holocaust Remembrance Program
On Wednesday, May 9th, 108 students from Marion L. Steele High School went to the Lorain Palace Theater to experience a powerful program with a Holocaust survivor speaking about her experience. There were several Violins of Hope that came from Jerusalem with stories of how these violins survived as their owners were going to Auschwitz, and some of these violins will be played at the program.
Model Congress, Presidential Bracketology & Mock Trial
Mr. McConihe's Social Studies III Government & Economics classes finished the school year with three hands-on, project-based activities to learn more about the three branches of government.
In March, students contacted their legislator after researching bills, wrote their own bills, and participated in committee & floor exercises using Robert's Rules of Order.
In April, students competed in one-item debates in a Presidential Bracketology Tournament evaluating the executive accomplishments of their respective presidents.
During May, students are participating in a Mock Trial to learn the aspects of the judicial branch, including jury duty, voir dire, venire, Ohio Revised Code, and analyzed the best strategies to make their case. Lawyers made opening & closing statements, prepared witnesses who offered their testimony on the stand in room 110 courtroom. Honorable McConihe presided over the case which the students enjoyed immensely.
