PODCAST: TALKING ABOUT MULTI-TIERED SYSTEM OF SUPPORTS (MTSS)
APHS GAVE OUT THE "WE MAKE AP A GREAT PLACE TO BE" AWARDS
APHS wrapped up its final "We Make AP a GREAT Place To BE" class assemblies last week. This year each class met quarterly with their Assistant Principals and reviewed their progress on grades, attendance, and behavior. Teachers nominated individual students for the "I Make AP a GREAT Place to BE" awards who were also acknowledged at that assembly. Thank you to NOPIATEs and Kiwanis for their generous donation of gift baskets to the cause.

THE SCIENCE RESEARCH PROGRAM AT APHS
PES KINDERGARTENERS USED SOFTWARE TO MAKE ART
Kindergarteners at PES used the Autodraw website to make a picture with their names on it. They had to use the magic marker tool to draw the picture they wanted and then use the text tool to write their name. Great job Kindergarten!

ALL SPRING VARSITY TEAMS WERE NAMED SCHOLAR-ATHLETE TEAMS
STUDENTS AT APHS PARTICIPATED IN THE 2024 CAPITAL REGION MEDIA ARTS FESTIVAL
This festival was developed and organized to provide students with a venue to explore and share their creative efforts in the media arts.
The collection of artwork is a combined effort of 16 school districts that submitted 180 pieces of artwork and over 90 minutes of film. Every school selected 12 images for Photography and Graphic Design and up to 15 minutes of film. The judges selected distinguished works to receive awards in the Film, Graphic Design and Photography genre. The work was adjudicated by a professional photographer, filmmaker, illustrator and graphic designer.

MAY 1 WAS NATIONAL PRINCIPALS DAY
SIX GRADE LITERACY STUDENTS WERE TREATED TO AN ICE CREAM PARTY
Sixth grade literacy students from AMS raised over $4,300 for Ronald McDonald House Charities in Albany through their reading and donations! Ronald McDonald House's programs provide support to families who have to travel due to the medical needs of their children.
Students were treated to an ice cream sundae party provided by the Algonquin Parent Organization. Nancy Damato, the Director of Read for RMHC, came to thank the students personally for their fundraising efforts!
MAY 4TH WAS NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH HERO DAY

On Friday, May 3, PES celebrated its Special Persons Day! Students and their special persons got a chance to spend time together with perfect weather.
AP'S FOOD SERVICE WAS FEATURED ON THE NYS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT'S WEBSITE
The Food Service team at AP provided students with great breakfast items during the National School Breakfast Week. They were featured on the New York State Education Department’s spotlight which covered the week’s activities from across the state.

AMS CELEBRATED THEIR 21ST ANNUAL RICHTOL’S READ ALL DAY
AMS celebrated their 21st Annual Richtol’s Read All Day on Thursday, May 9th. This day is a celebration of reading and literacy. RRAD is named in memory of Literacy teacher Ms. Richtol, who started this event.
AMS faculty/administration volunteered their time to read to classes. Thank you to Mr. DuMont, Mrs. Reinisch, and Dr. Rhode who shared stories and musical gifts!
All AMS students were able to see presentations from award-winning author John David Anderson and they had the opportunity to have lunch with him and have their books signed after school. To prepare for his visit, students participated in a door decorating contest based on his book Posted, which AMS read as part of its One Book, One School program. Mr. Anderson gave students a fun and memorable day!
THE APHS KEY CLUB CLEANED UP THE CAMPUS
Recently, the APHS Key Club had their bi-annual school-wide cleanup!
GIRL SCOUT COOKIES DONATED TO THE BACK PACK AND PANTRY PROGRAM
Recently, Kimberly Turner from the Girl Scouts of Northeast NY, donated 28 cartons of Girl Scout cookies to go to students accessing our Back Pack/Pantry Program at the elementary, middle, and high school level. Thank you GSNENY!

MAY 8 WAS NATIONAL SCHOOL NURSE DAY
TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT HAD A 98.68% PASS RATE ON VEHICLE INSPECTIONS
For the 2023-2024 school year, Averill Park CSD’s Transportation Department had a 98.68% pass rate on vehicle inspections performed on their fleet by the New York State Department of Transportation. The state-wide goal is for schools to have a pass rate of 90% or above, while the average school district in New York has a 95.8% pass rate. The District’s Transportation Department well exceeded those State expectations and surpassed the State average.
Congratulations to the hard-working Transportation Department employees and thank you for a job well done!
HIRING: GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL ASSISTANT COACH
APHS CONCERT BAND PERFORMED AT ITHACA COLLEGE
On May 4, the Averill Park High School Concert Band traveled to Ithaca College to participate in the Music for All Affiliate Regional Music Festival, a non-competitive event that included 17 different bands from throughout the Northeast, with over 700 students participating. Students were able to hear the Ithaca Wind Ensemble perform as well as other school groups perform, attend individual instrument master classes, perform on the Ithaca College stage, receive commentary from internationally renowned adjudicators, and receive a clinic from one of the adjudicators.
The program the band performed included "Overture in Bb" by Caesar Giovannini (arr. Wayne Robinson), "Ye Banks and Braes O' Bonnie Doon" by Percy Aldridge Grainger, and "Minuteman" (Concert March) by Robert H. Pearson. The band performed the Grainger in the March concert, but you can hear "Overture in Bb" and "Minuteman", as well as other works, in the final concert for the APHS Music program this year on Thursday, May 23 at 6:30 in the high school auditorium. The free concert will also include music performed by the Choir, Chamber Strings, Treble Choir, and Jazz Ensemble.

UPCOMING FUNDRAISER: IMPORT & DOMESTIC CAR SHOW
The 3rd annual Averill Park High School World Languages Department and International Club’s Import & Domestic Car Show will take place on Saturday June 1, 2024 at Averill Park High School (146 Gettle Road, Averill Park, NY 12018). Registration ($10 day of show) is from 9:00am until 11:00 and the show continues until 2:00. Our volunteer student judges (coached by Hemmings Motor News professionals) will be selecting the winning vehicles in 21 different trophy categories. Imported and domestic cars, motorcycles, and trucks are all welcome.
Registration proceeds will benefit senior scholarships for the World Languages Department.
Car wash and food proceeds will benefit the International Club. The rain date is June 2.

Students at AMS received the Sandra G Morley award, presented by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance recognizes our best and brightest students. Those selected have demonstrated excellent leadership characteristics, sportsmanship and have been a role model for students in our building.
