Langston's Letters
May 6 - May 10
A Note from the Principal
Dear Langston Hughes Family,
This week we begin to gather data on our students that will help us determine how much progress they have made this year. Students in grades three, four, and five will sit for the New York State Mathematics Examination on Tuesday May 7th and Wednesday May 8th. It is extremely important that students come to school on time. If they are sick they can take the exam during the makeup period. Finally, if your child wears glasses, make sure they bring them to school.
We will do our best to ensure that students are not overly stressed. It is important for them to remember that everything that they have learned this year will be helpful on the exam. More importantly, please remember that the mathematics exams represent just two days in the school year. While students should do their very best on the exam, please know that promotion is not based solely on the results of the test. Do not place any added stress on your child.
Have a wonderful week!

Home-School Connection
Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten registration has begun. Kindergarten registration is not automatic. If you were awarded a seat in our kindergarten program and your child currently attends our pre-kindergarten program, you are still required to register for kindergarten. If you have questions or need support, please feel free to reach out to your Parent Coordinator, Tanisha Allen. Ms. Tanisha can be reached at (516) 519-3812 Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:30am and 3:30pm.
Mother's Day Plant and Bake Sale
Please support our Mother's Day Plant and Bake sale. Sweet treats and plants will be sold on Friday May 10th in the school lobby at 11:35am, 12:35pm, and 2:20pm. For more information please contact Ms. David and Ms. Nesbitt.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Please note, our final Parent-Teacher Conference for the year will take place on May 23. This meeting is especially important if your child received a Promotion-in-Doubt letter in February. Please ensure that you meet with your child's teacher by that date to discuss the progress towards promotion that your child made.
Save the Date
We are excited to announce that the Rising Star Steel Band has been invited to compete in the CLACC-C School Steel Band Festival. The competition is scheduled for Saturday, June 22nd at Prospect Heights High School Athletic Field in Brooklyn. We are providing the date now because we want to fill that field with members of our school community. We want our children to look out onto the crowd and see many familiar faces. I'll share more details as soon as they are received, but in the meantime, SAVE THE DATE, Saturday June 22nd. This will probably be the last school event of the 23-24 school year, so let's make it count!
