CAASPP Testing
Test Anxiety
It’s natural for kids to sometimes feel stressed about taking tests and exams, especially if the stakes are high. But when the stress is ongoing, it can lead to test anxiety.
With test anxiety, kids worry in advance about doing poorly — sometimes to the point of dreading going to school on test day. Any child can have it, but test anxiety is common in kids who learn and think differently. (So is general anxiety.)
Kids with differences may struggle with skills needed for taking tests or with understanding the material. And if they have a history of not doing well on tests, it can increase the fear of failure.
Test anxiety may begin days or even weeks before the test and build as the time gets closer. It can interfere with studying or other schoolwork. And the anxiety itself can affect how well kids do on tests.
Having test anxiety doesn’t mean kids have an anxiety problem — especially if their worrying is limited to this one area. But it can still take a toll on their well-being and self-esteem.
MANAGING TEST ANXIETY
There are lots of ways to help kids learn to manage test anxiety. And there are steps you can take to reduce the amount of stress around taking tests.
It’s important for parents and teachers to share information about what they’re seeing. Then they can work together to give kids the best support. Strategies that work in one setting might also help in the other.

Brookhaven CAASPP Letter 2025
There are many ways to measure your child’s learning and it is natural for every student to have academic strengths as well as areas where they may need more support and improvement. Your child’s teacher uses report card grades, classroom work, teacher observations, and end-of-year statewide test results to get a complete picture of your child’s learning. Each year, students across the state participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Your child will take the following tests, depending on their grade level or instructional program:
Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts and math, required tests in grades 3–8 and 11
California Science Test (CAST), a required test in grades 5 and 8 and 11
This year, students at Brookhaven will take the summative assessments during the following testing window: May 5-30, 2025. The testing schedule will be provided by your child’s teacher.
You are an important part of your child’s education. To make sure your child feels comfortable taking tests, you can:
Explain to your child that these tests are tools to help them learn, and they should not be anxious or scared.
Explore the practice tests with your child at caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html so they can become familiar with the platform and setup of the tests.
Remind your child that you and their teacher want them to try their best and are there to help, every step of the way.
You will receive your child’s results at or before the beginning of the next school year. The results will identify where your child is doing well or needs more help, so you can better support their learning at home and teachers can better support their learning in the classroom.
To learn more about these tests go to the Starting Smarter web page at ca.startingsmarter.org/, or review the Parent Guides to Understanding at cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.
The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District and Brookhaven Elementary are home to outstanding students, teachers, and programs and together we encourage full participation in CAASPP testing to ensure our students and schools earn the recognition they deserve.
