Massillon City Schools PBIS News
4th Quarter Edition 2023
What Is PBIS?
PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports) is a system that our schools use to support students in many ways. PBIS consists of clear behavioral expectations, teaching and re-teaching these expectations, and acknowledging students for meeting these expectations. PBIS supports are tailored to meet the needs of all students. The goal of PBIS is to create a positive school climate that leads to safety and success for all students.
How Did PBIS Start In Massillon Schools
PBIS started in Massillon in the 2010’s, and has been going strong since! We have received quite a few recognitions over the years as well. The Massillon Preschool has been awarded the Bronze recognition through the Ohio Department of Education and the PBIS Network in 2021 and 2022. Massillon Intermediate was awarded the Bronze recognition in 2020 and Silver in 2021. Massillon Junior High achieved Bronze in 2016 and Silver in 2017. Lastly, Washington High was recently awarded the Bronze recognition in 2022. What does this mean? It means that our schools are working diligently to make sure we are going above and beyond for our students, and making the best decisions that we can for them!

Massillon City Schools 4 B's
The 4 B’s were developed by the district PBIS team to guide our students and staff to become better educators, students, friends and people. All buildings in the district have matrices in the hallways to remind students and staff of the everyday expectations in all areas of the buildings.
Be Safe
Our littlest tigers focus on being safe in the classroom, bus, hallways, restrooms, and classrooms. Our older scholars work on being safe in main areas and across classrooms in the buildings. This focus in our district assists the students in taking a role in becoming a successful student.
Be Kind
In Massillon being kind is a staple in our district. Our students from pre-K-12 focus on being kind to peers, teachers, monitors, aides, administrators, and themselves. Whether it be through words or actions, we take pride in helping and caring for each other.
Be Responsible
Being responsible in Massillon City Schools means that students are taking responsibility in their learning and becoming responsible citizens.
Be Respectful
R-e-s-p-e-c-t means that the students in Massillon are taking pride in everything and everyone around them! Being respectful at school is an important skill in becoming a well rounded student.

Be Here!
Regular school attendance is critical to the development and education of children. It is also one of the most powerful predictors of future success, both in school and after graduation.
Attendance Facts
1 missed school day= 2.5 days of lost math learning and 1.5 days of literacy learning
2 absent days a month (18 for the year)= Chronic Absenteeism
Chronic absenteeism in KG & 1st= less likely to read at grade level by 3rd grade
By 3rd grade, chronic absenteeism = a 50 day instructional gap (more than a quarter of school)
By 6th grade chronic absenteeism is a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
How can I help my child succeed?
As a parent or guardian, your support for student attendance is critical. Here are a few ideas to help your child show up every day.
Setup for success the night before- consistent bedtime, lay out clothes, pack your backpack and do whatever else you can to prepare for an easier morning.
Build in a consistent morning routine- consistent wakeup time, brush teeth, get dressed, etc.
Talk positively about the importance of school with your child.
