The April issue of Synapse highlights exciting NAS events including Celebration of Science week, Grand Seminar lecture, and the Inaugural NAS Scholars Recognition. If a picture worth a thousand words, then this issue of Synapse worth several thousands of words. Moreover, the Grand Seminar talk may suggest that if a picture is worth a thousand words, then a satellite image of the Sun may worth a million of dollars.

This year's Grand Seminar was held on Tuesday, April 5. We welcomed our keynote speaker Dr. Nicola Fox who presented on "What's New and Good Under the Sun". Dr. Fox is Heliophysics Division Director in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC.

In addition to students, faculty, staff, and members of community who attended this engaging presentation about sun, we had the pleasure of having President Sawyer welcoming everyone and interim Provost and Vise President for Academics Affairs, Dr. Cheryl Moore-Thomas, introducing our speaker. One of the highlights of the natural and applied sciences Celebration of Science week was celebrating the achievements of our NAS scholars. Four groups of NAS scholars recognized during this event included Hauber Fellows, Haig Scholars, CPaMS scholars, and Choudhury Sarkar-Dey NAS divisional medal finalists and medalist. Moreover, the pinning for University innovation Fellows (UIFs) was conducted during this event.

The Choudhury Sarkar-Dey medal for Natural and Applied Sciences was established through the generous philanthropy of professor of mathematics and statistics Dipa Sarkar-Dey, Ph.D. This medal is presented to an exemplary undergraduate senior majoring in the sciences who shows commitment to diversity and engagement with community service and justice. We are pleased to announce this year's recipient is biochemistry major Alejandro Perez, '22.
