Alice Smith - 1st Grade
March 14, 2025
Hello 1st Grade Families!
A HUGE thank you to everyone for attending our Spring Conferences. We enjoyed meeting with you to discuss your student's "glows & grows" in 1st grade :).
LITERACY: Students were introduced to nonfiction text features (table of contents, headings, diagrams, captions, glossary). We practiced identifying these features with the story Using Your Senses. Students continue to participate in daily UFLI phonics lessons. Please check your student's red communication folder for the Home Practice (half sheet of paper) and short reading passages that support this learning. These practice materials will be sent home twice a week, and we are encouraging students to review and practice with a caregiver at home. Students should be reading 10-15 minutes per night as homework.
MATH: In Unit 4: Numbers to 99, students are developing an understanding of place value and the structure of numbers in base 10 (tens & ones). On Friday, we celebrated "Pi Day." Students learned about the infinite number Pi (3.1415926535...), created a funny "pi" recipes, and made their own "pi" treat :).
SCIENCE: In the Mystery Science Unit "Light, Sound & Communication, students are exploring, investigating, and working to answer questions such as:
-How do they make silly sounds in cartoons?
-Where do sounds come from?
-What if there were no windows?
-Can you see in the dark?
-How could you send a secret message to someone far away?
SOCIAL STUDIES: During the month of March, our focus will be Women's History Month. Throughout the month, students will learn about different amazing women and the impact they've had on our world.
Have a WONDERFUL weekend!
