Principal's Message
Dear Valley View Parents and Families,
The first quarter of school is almost complete! It’s hard to believe that we have had almost two months of school already. As we approach the end of the first quarter, we have had some fun and also have some important events coming up:
Spirit Week (October 25th – 29th): We had our first Spirit Week of the year! Mrs. Neff and Ms. Weyhrauch coordinated different dress-up days each week, and we had a different Spirit Assembly during each lunch this week. At our lunchtime assemblies, ASB officers were introduced, principals competed, students played “Guess What Teacher?” and our choir performed for their classmates.
Second Season Sports (2nd): Boys’ basketball tryouts begin on Monday and girls' volleyball tryouts Wednesday and Thursday.
Fall SBA (November 2nd and 4th): This is fully described below. This is an abbreviated version of the SBA that we missed taking last spring.
Fall Band Concert (November 3rd): Our first fall band concert of the year is on Tuesday of next week. Mr. Mines is communicating the protocol that needs to be followed to our band families.
Veterans Day (November 8th): We will be having our Veterans Day virtual assembly during Viking Period on Monday, November 8th. There will be a Color Guard video, a message from our ASB students, and performances by our band and a soloist. Our keynote speaker, Lt. Colonial Jason Garneau (a U.S. Army Military Intelligence officer), will be delivering a message to our students about being a servant leader and overcoming obstacles.
Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences (November 9th and 10th): We will be having our fall parent-teacher conferences on Zoom this year. Early next week, you will be getting an email containing a link to sign up for a five-minute span of time with each of their student’s 1st quarter teachers. 7th grade students have quarter-long electives, and it is important that you don’t sign up for conferences with your student’s second quarter teachers because they will not know your student yet. It is highly encouraged that families of students who are receiving D or F grades sign up for conferences. If you are unable to make conferences for any reason, you can reach out to teachers to get information about your student’s progress.
Thank you for your support as we end a successful first quarter. We are excited to see the return of our school events. Let us know if we have any questions.
Sincerely,
Brian Burdon
Interim Principal
SBA Testing
Valley View 7th and 8th grade students will be taking a limited version of the SBA (Smarter Balanced Assessment) this Fall to measure learning from last year, the 2020-2021 school year. This test would normally be taken in the spring, but due to Covid, spring testing was cancelled. The test will be shorter, and will be taken during ELA and Math classes with only minor disruptions in the schedule.
- 8th grade students will take the 7th grade Math and English/Language Arts test.
- 7th grade students will take the 6th grade Math and English/Language Arts test.
The following is the schedule for fall testing:
November 2: ELA test
November 3: ELA make-up / additional time
November 4: Math test
November 5: Math make-up/ additional time
On Tuesday, November 2 and Thursday, November 4, we will not have Viking period in order to give students more time to work on the SBA. Mon, Wed, and Friday of that week will be regular schedule.
Please help ensure that students get a good night’s sleep, eat breakfast, and bring a healthy snack and water.
Because the district computers have the testing software already downloaded, we will ensure that your student has a district device to use for testing.
Sick?
If a student or staff member is not feeling well and has any symptoms of illness, even mild ones, please stay home. Symptoms could include cough, sore throat, fever, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or loss of taste or smell. One symptom is enough to warrant staying home as a precaution. We know it can be frustrating to stay home with mild symptoms. Children get sniffles, a cough, or upset stomach from time to time, and this is usually not cause for alarm. But this pandemic is the time for extra caution, and all students and staff should stay home even if symptoms are mild. If a student or staff member with symptoms does go to school, or if they start having symptoms while they are at school, expect they will be isolated and sent home as soon as possible. This means an ill student would likely be asked to wait in a dedicated room where they are not near others until a parent/guardian arrives to take them home. Students who are ill or are symptomatic should be picked up within 30 minutes of parents/guardians being contacted.
Class A symptoms:
- Fever (defined as subjective or 100.4 F or higher)
- Cough
- Chills
- Loss of sense of taste and/or smell
- Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
or
Class B symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Muscle or body aches
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea (defined as 2 or more loose stool in 24 hours)
Upon returning home
The information in this section only pertains to those individuals who are not a confirmed close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19:
- If the student or staff member is tested for COVID-19 (physician-, lab-, pharmacy- or clinic-confirmed test) and the results are negative, they may return to school once their symptoms have improved, and they’ve been fever-free for at least 24 hours. Anyone with symptoms is encouraged to get tested.
- If a student or staff member has symptoms but is not tested for COVID-19, they must remain home according to the timelines below and at least 24 hours after fever is gone and symptoms have improved:
- 1 class A symptom of any duration = 10-day quarantine
- 2 class B symptoms of any duration = 10-day quarantine
- 1 class B symptom lasting more than 24 hours = 10-day quarantine
- Those who have symptoms but have not tested for COVID-19 and are not close contacts of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, may obtain a medical professional’s note clearing them for return. The medical professional’s note must be based on the individual’s established medical history or must include an alternative lab-confirmed diagnosis.
Attendance Procedures

Did you order Spirit Wear?
Thank you to families who ordered Spirit Wear – we love your school spirit! For families who requested their Spirit Wear orders be sent to the school, we regret that we are not able to do school delivery this year. These orders should be available for pick-up at the Streamline building at 1910 Bickford Ave Suite H, Snohomish. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes! To fix this problem for the future, Streamline will be removing the ‘deliver to school’ option. If you have questions about your order, please contact Streamline at 360-243-3949 or veronica@streamline-llc.net.
You can contribute photos to our yearbook.
