Summer is Almost Here!
Wrapping up 2023-2024 Northside Newsletter
It has been a year of adventures!
Last Day of School - FRIDAY MAY 31st
The last day of school is Friday, May 31st. School is dismissed at 11:10. No lunch is served on the last day.
The School Year is Almost Over...
Every school seems to go by so fast, but this year feels like I blinked and here we are! I want to thank you for your constant support and communication over the entire school year. The support of our families (and extended families!) is so tremendously appreciated and we THANK YOU. Whether it is donating snacks for classrooms, going on field trips as chaperones, supporting the PTO, sending in appreciation notes or goodies during teacher & staff appreciation week, volunteering your time, or making donations for the Basket Raffle, it all matters.
A Celebration of Growth!
Since the beginning of the school year, the staff has been diligently analyzing students' growth, and the most recent spring results show that there is so much to celebrate! Our students deserve immense recognition for their daily hard work, meeting high expectations, and preparing for the next grade level. I couldn’t be prouder to be part of a team that continually adapts, assesses each student’s academic, social, and emotional needs, develops tailored plans, and works tirelessly every day.
Despite students' incredible progress during the school year, many experience a significant setback over the summer, particularly those who received interventions. Engaging in reading and basic math conceptual work several times a week during the summer months can make a notable difference when students return to school in the fall. I highly recommend our Summer Reading and Math Challenge for all students!
Parent/Guardian Survey Results
There was a strong participation rate with the parent/guardian survey results again this year. Thank you for taking the time to complete it and giving us valuable feedback. I carefully read all survey responses to begin plans to improve and celebrate the successes with the Northside team.
With a school of over 380 students and over 60 staff working in the building, these survey results are amazing. The end of this school year reminds me once again that we have a very special elementary school, and it takes everyone working together, putting children first, and having high expectations to achieve this success. I want to thank you for taking the time to highlight the staff who made a difference, comment on what is appreciated most about Northside, and the suggestions to make our school better. I will share the glowing comments with the staff so thank you for noticing what a fantastic team we have at Northside!
Survey highlights include the following:
94%--Satisfied with your child’s school (5% neutral and 1% dissatisfied)
97%--Northside has adults who really care for my child and their success in school.
91%--I feel connected to the teachers and staff at Northside.
94%–The school promotes academic success for ALL students.
95%--The teachers have high expectations in the learning environment (5% neutral)
97%--I feel comfortable raising an issue of concern with my child’s teacher
93%--The school enforces the rules and expectations.
77%–Discipline issues are handled fairly. (9% not applicable; 9% neutral; 5% disagree)
97%--My child has at least one trusted adult at school.
94%--My child reports feeling safe at school. (6% neutral)
99%--I trust the principal to make decisions that are in the best interest of the students.
94%--I am comfortable raising an issue of concern with the principal. (6% neutral)
95%--The school promptly responds to phone calls, messages, and emails. (5% neutral)
*Parent/Guardian interest in school-offered workshops: 71% in helping children respond to frustration and 60% in anxiety coping skills. These numbers are higher than anticipated and we will certainly be thinking of ways to support our families in the future.
A note to the 5th Grade Families: You have raised incredible children whom the staff and I will truly miss. This memorable group is filled with students who have big hearts, exceptional talents, and high achievements. I have no doubt they will do great things in their futures. I am incredibly proud of how far they have come and deeply appreciate their role as exceptionally strong leaders in our school. To the families who have been with us throughout the entire elementary journey and are now seeing their last child graduate from Northside, thank you for trusting us with your children. I hope you will always remember Northside with the fondest of memories. As we always say to our departing fifth graders, remember that wherever you go and whatever you do, you will always be a Northsider!
Have a wonderful summer and do not hesitate to reach out over the summer if you need anything,
Amy

Make Snacks Quick and Healthy 🍎
Processed foods are often high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and sodium. Many of the convenient snacks and desserts that our kids gravitate towards fall into this category. One easy way to avoid processed foods is to make your own snacks and desserts. The following recipe is a quick, tasty treat that your family can make together. It's a good idea to double this recipe as they disappear quickly.
GRANOLA CUPS (makes ~18 )
Ingredients
2 Tablespoons melted coconut oil
2 cups rolled or quick oats
1 cup all natural nut butter of your choice
ÂĽ cup maple syrup
1 T coconut oil
1 cup dark chocolate chips
nuts for topping (optional)
Directions
Measure 2 T coconut oil, add to a small mixing bowl, microwave for 15 seconds, set aside. In large bowl, use rubber scraper to mix together 2 cups oats, 1 cup peanut butter, ÂĽ cup maple syrup, & the 2 T melted coconut oil
Use cookie scoop to press mixture into muffin tins. Measure 1 cup of chocolate chips & 1 T coconut oil, place in a small mixing bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, mix well, repeat until melted. Use a spoon to pour chocolate over each granola cup. Freeze for at least 2 hours, then can then be stored in the refrigerator. ENJOY!

April Camper of the Month - Kiara Cook
Today is a day to celebrate something really special—leadership and kindness. This awesome fifth-grader didn't just go above and beyond with her studies (though she totally did), but she also showed us what it means to be a great leader and a super kind friend. Kiara is more than deserving for this award. I nominated her because of all the amazing things she has done in the classroom this year. But she won by a landslide because the many staff members who voted for her, have seen her amazing qualities throughout the building this year and in years past. Kiara’s influence in our school goes beyond words. She is definitely someone I could easily see being a teacher in the future by the way she leads the younger students through kindergarten buddies or even in the hallway. She has patience to help fellow students with really tough situations or course work. Kiara is mature, organized, and extremely respectful. She is the person I turn to when I need a trusting student to help with any task. Kiara, you have made such a huge impact in your short time here at Northside, I know you will do amazing things in the future at the Middle School and beyond.

The Northside Way Committee focuses on using positive behavioral strategies to help students learn and exhibit expected behaviors at school, home, and within the community. Each month the committee meets to evaluate behavior data, determine focus areas, and plan ways to reteach, reinforce, and celebrate.
During the month of May, students practiced behaviors that showed they can DO HARD THINGS!! We earned superstones by being quiet in the hallways, completing final tests and project, being kind to all, and more. We earned 7,241 which awarded us PRINCIPAL DARE AND 6 teachers to get pies in the face. The last few days of school are focused on fun and reflecting on a great school year. We cannot wait to see what next year brings!!
