Message From the Leadership Team
Dear AMS Families,
Amherst Middle School has a rich 50-year history of educating and supporting middle school students in our community. While we had a week of exciting events, today was certainly the icing on the cake! We welcomed several community members and former staff members to the building (including all four former principals). Mr. Paul Collins, the original principal who opened Amherst Middle School in 1974, and for whom our library is named, was in attendance for the celebration.
Students participated in 70's themed disco parties and activities with their grade levels as part of today's activities. The highlight of the day was the short assembly in front of the building, which included a drone photo session and time capsule sealing ceremony to commemorate the occasion.
This week was and exciting one for sure! Between our decades Spirit Week, Recycled Percussion performances, and a 50th Anniversary celebration today, we have made many memories that will be cherished for years to come. This week would not be possible without the support of our local community, students, and staff. Everyone worked hard to contribute to and participate in the celebration.
We look forward to building upon the rich history of Amherst Middle School, and working to meet the ever-evolving needs of our learners over the years to come. Here's to 50 years!
Be well,
Kristen Gauthier

Current 7th Grade Families - 8th Grade Ecology School (September/October 2024)
Please click HERE for the full letter to AMS 7th grade families regarding the fall 2024 8th grade trip.
This fall, students will have a unique opportunity to experience an immersive learning experience on ecosystem dynamics, which will give real life context to many of the key principles of science. The study of ecosystems is an essential element of our science curriculum and provides a rich variety of connections to the math, language arts and social studies curricula as well as to STEM education.
This program will take place on the beautiful residential campus of The Ecology School in Saco, Maine at their River Bend Farm campus located along the Saco River. Many students had the opportunity to learn at this site as sixth graders. Our eighth grade trip uses this past learning as the building blocks for a deeper understanding of our local ecology while allowing the students to become the data collectors and true scientists.
Please note that this year’s trip is a four-day experience, Tuesday through Friday of each week. Since team assignments will not be finalized until the summer, please mark all of these dates on your family calendar to avoid conflicts. Team Volcano’s trip will be from September 27th - 30th and team Hurricane’s from October 1st - 4th.
