Principal's Update

We've had a fabulous first week of school. Walking through classrooms on Thursday seeing kindergarteners using scissors and fourth graders taking notes, I couldn't believe students had only been in school 3 days. They're already getting into a great rhythm!

Instructionally, there are two things we're focusing on this year:

First, we adopted a new math curriculum at all elementary schools in Greenfield. It's called Bridges. Our teachers are excited, because they had been adding a lot to our old resource for quite some time as it didn't have the rigor our students needed. One of the parts of the curriculum is called "Home Connections". This is not the same as homework. This is work that is for you to do with your child to reinforce their learning at home. Many families really enjoyed working through the questions for Frindle last year; we hope that the Home Connections math sheets will help you to be involved in your child’s ongoing learning in math this year. (Note: Your child may have some math homework, separate from this, if they have something they did not finish in class).

Home Connections will be sent home after the content has been taught in school. You’re encouraged to support your child in completing them, and having them explain the work to you. Home Connetions should be kept at home so that you can use them to review learning with your child throughout the year. You do not need to return them to school. We hope Home Connections help us to partner to support your child’s math learning this year!

Second, we're continuing to learn more about the science of reading so that we can help more and more of our students to meet and exceed grade level expectations. This year, we're focusing on expanding children's oral language and vocabulary. I'll explain more about this in a future newsletter. For now, know that the best ways to expand your child's vocabulary at home are to read to them and talk to them. I look forward to sharing more about this with you soon!
