Weekly Updates
Dear Hózhó Families,
NWEA Testing Week - We will be administering our final round of NWEA MAP testing in Reading, Language and Math next week. The NWEA is an adaptive test that we give to students three times throughout the year to measure their growth over time. Thank you for supporting your child by making sure that he or she gets a good night's sleep and arrives on time for breakfast on testing days. Please see the important dates below to know what days your student will be testing.
Staff Appreciation Week - If you would like to show your appreciation for our staff, please deliver a potluck lunch item to the lounge of the school that your child attends sometime before 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6th. We have staff lounges in the Lower School, Junior High and Upper School. If you have children at more than one school, just pick one lounge. Any contribution is appreciated. If your family is already contributing on one of the other days, please do not feel like you need to give more than once. Thank you for your ongoing support of our school. We LOVE working with your children!
Color Run Fundraiser - Gallup Children's Museum is hosting another Color Run fundraiser on May 10th at Rehoboth School. If there are any Hozho Students interested in volunteering to host a color station (like last year where you spray runners with color powder), please email Kimberly Suk at <kimberlygsuk@gmail.com>. We would need between 4-8 people for a station. It could be a sports team, NHS, etc.
If you have questions, please contact our front office at (505) 722-8922.

3rd Grade Unit 4: Problem-Solving
Your child is learning a four-part process that can help them solve common interpersonal problems— disagreements between two or more people, such as disagreeing with a friend about how to play or work together. The process is called STEP (Say the problem, Think of solutions, Explore the outcomes, Pick a solution). Third graders practice thinking about what each person wants as a way to say the problem without blame and to help them think of different possible solutions. They also learn that finding a compromise, so that both sides get some of what they want, is one good way to pick a successful solution. Another way is to show kindness.
Why is it important? Research shows that children who learn the skills in this unit are more likely to:
- Have better mental health
- Make better decisions
- Resolve conflicts more effectively
Practice at Home
Notice and praise your child when they resolve a conflict on their own—reaching an agreement with a friend on the rules of a game, for example, or letting a sibling have their way. You can say, “It’s nice to see you work things out without any help.”
Practice: Help your child practice exploring different possible solutions to an interpersonal problem. For example, you could say, “If you take turns, would you get what you want? Would your sister? Is there a way to solve the problem that shows kindness?”
Discuss: Take turns describing a time when you reached a compromise with someone. Explain why the compromise worked for both of you. For example, “When I was growing up, my sister and I both wanted the top bunk in the bedroom we shared. We agreed on a compromise: for one week, I’d sleep there, and then we’d trade and she’d get it the next week. We both got what we wanted part of the time.”
