GENERAL FOUR YEAR COLLEGE INFORMATION
Add All College Applications – To “Colleges I’m Applying To” on Naviance
Please list every school that you applied to on Naviance including CSUs and UCs. We can’t submit documents until you list them on Naviance. Also, make sure you note that you submitted your application as well.
What to do after you’ve submitted your applications: Some Schools Require Self-Reported Academic Record
Many schools require you to self-report your grades from your transcript into the Common App. After you’ve applied to those schools, make sure to:
Create your portals
Check that all portions of your part of the application were received
Many schools will say that you need to submit your Self-Reported Academic Record to their system, even if you already did it on the Common App.
Check each school and make sure it’s submitted.
See the directions on the University of Oregon website here for an example.
REMOVING a College From Colleges I’m Applying to on Naviance
Email your counselor, Ignaitis/Yeager, and teachers of the colleges you are not applying (one email to all) and complete this FORM (Only Students using their seq email can complete the form)
Process of Submitting Application and School Documents
When we submit documents for your 1st due date, we submit them to all the schools on your list and there is NO way we would know if you added or removed a school, unless you tell us.
After You Submit and Some CSU Deadlines Extended
Next Steps: AFTER YOU SUBMIT APPLICATION
Soon after you apply, you will receive an email from the CSU with directions on how to set up its portal. Every school is a little different so make sure to keep track of your login information.
Check Portals and Emails Often
Every school is a little different so make sure to keep track of your login information. To meet all deadlines, check your email and portals weekly and DO NOT WAIT to complete your “To Do” list.
CSU Application Deadline EXTENDED for some schools:
Later Deadlines are available for all schools except Fullerton, Long Beach, Pomona, San Diego, San Jose, San Luis Obispo.
Visit our Application Dates & Deadlines page for more information on which campuses are still open and their deadlines.
I just applied…. now what? (From CSUapply)
The first thing applicants should do after applying is check their emails to confirm that the campuses they applied to have received their application. Applicants can also check that information in the Cal State Apply portal under “check status.”
Applicants should pay close attention to emails and text messages from the campuses they applied to in case there are any updates to their application. Campuses will send out notice of their admissions decision by March 31, 2025.
Lastly, applicants should apply for financial aid as soon as possible. At the CSU, about 80% of students receive some kind of financial aid, and 60% of undergraduates have their tuition completely covered by grants or other non-load aid.
Find out more about what to expect after you’ve submitted a CSU application.
EOP Deadlines
Students who expressed interest and the intention to apply to the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) on Cal State Apply for fall 2025 should check individual campus EOP application and documents deadlines on the EOP Admission by Term website. Document deadlines include letter of recommendations. Students can still go back into Cal State Apply to indicate they are interested in applying for EOP if they haven’t missed the campus deadline.
Get Your Application Checked If You Are Applying to schools still accepting CSU Application
It takes less than 15 minutes to check your courses are correct. Come in during lunch, before school, FLEX, or if you have a free period email Ignaitis (A-L) or Yeager (M-Z)
From UC Berkeley - Random Selection to Submit Letters of Recommendation
Deadline to Submit: January 10th
We invite up to 15% of our freshman applicants to submit up to two letters of recommendation. A recommendation letter from a teacher, counselor, or another education professional can be helpful in our review as it can add context to the application. Letters of recommendation are not required, and the invitation to submit a letter should not be used as a predictor of admission.
Note that letters of recommendation are only accepted for invited students through our electronic systems. Please remind your students that upon receiving a request to submit letters of recommendation, to enter their recommenders information into our system.
For more information on this process, please review our Freshman Policy page.
UC application verification
Deadline: January 31, 2025
As in previous years, UC selects a random sampling of applicants who are required to verify information in their application. The selection and notification take place in mid-December. Applicants are notified by postal mail, email and text message that they have been selected for verification, along with instructions on how to meet the requirements. Applicants are asked to provide original documentation to verify one item from the following sections on the UC application: academic history, honors and awards, extracurricular activities, volunteer work and community service, special program participation, employment or information contained in the personal insight responses.
The instructions sent to the selected applicants detail how to complete the process as well as a list of appropriate documentation. Appropriate documentation could include official transcripts, a letter from a teacher, counselor or coach on letterhead or a copy of a certificate or award. Letters from a counselor, teacher or a coach can be emailed to the UC application center directly from the counselor, teacher or coach. The deadline to respond is January 31, 2025. Failure to respond to the request by the deadline will result in cancellation of the application.
UC Personal Insight Question (PIQ) Plagiarism Check
After the application filing deadline, UC reviews all PIQ responses for plagiarism by using a plagiarism detection software program. Applicants who are found with a potential plagiarism violation will be emailed in early January and will have two weeks to respond.
Applicants will be provided instructions on how to provide information regarding the authenticity of their PIQ responses. The information applicants provide will be reviewed by several campus admissions officials, and applicants will be notified of a decision on the authenticity of their PIQ responses.
Failure to respond to the request by the deadline will result in cancellation of the application.
UC application fees and waiver
The fall 2025 application fee is $80 per campus. UC will continue to waive application fees for up to four campuses for qualifying students. The online fee waiver is found within the UC application and uses the applicant’s family size and income to determine eligibility. During the payment process, the UC application will notify the student of their eligibility and allow them to apply the waiver.
If an applicant received a fee waiver from an outside source (e.g., College Board, NACAC, EOPS) or is requesting a fee waiver based on changes in current financial circumstances, they should indicate that they will “pay fees by mail” and submit the external fee waiver in lieu of payment for four campuses by email to the UC Application Center at ucinfo@applyucsupport.net. External fee waivers and requests for UC fee waivers can be submitted after filing the UC application.
Fee waivers from different sources cannot be combined to cover application fees for more than four campuses. Fee waiver requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
UC’s application fee waiver program is for United States citizens, permanent residents and applicants eligible for AB540 benefits who meet the annual Income Eligibility Guidelines.
This information is also found on page 56 of the Quick Reference Guide to UC Admissions.
Need a College Board Fee Waiver?
If you applied and qualified for Free/Reduced Lunch at Sequoia by completing the Income Verification Form and took the SAT, you can get a fee waiver from the College Board. Please email Ms. Ignaitis (Last Names A-L) or Ms. Yeager (Last Names M-Z) to receive your code.
Once you have your code, you will login to your College Board Account, go to My SAT, enter the code and then scroll down to the right hand side where it says "Don't Forget to use your College Board Application Fee waivers." It will generate a PDF that you will email to the UC office, see information above.
Deferred? Here’s What to Do Next
Getting deferred from a college can be disappointing, but it's not the end of the road. Here are some tips for managing a deferral and how to improve your chances of acceptance.
Students who apply to college under an early decision or early action plan usually receive one of three decisions: accepted, denied or deferred. If you were accepted, great! You can celebrate. If you were denied, you can grieve the loss and focus on applying to other colleges.
But if you were deferred, you’re somewhere in between -- you’re not in, but you are not “not in” either. Some students describe it as admissions “purgatory."
WHAT IS A DEFERRED COLLEGE ADMISSIONS DECISION?
A deferral means the college wants to review your application again with the regular decision pool of applicants. While it might feel like a rejection, a deferral is not a denial, nor does it mean there was something wrong with your application. In fact, it’s quite the opposite: “If you were deferred it means your application is strong enough to continue to be seriously considered by the admissions committee,” explains Hannah Mendlowitz, Senior Assistant Director of Admissions at Yale University.
WHY DO COLLEGES DEFER STUDENTS?
The college’s goal is to build a well-rounded freshman class. If you’ve been deferred, usually it’s because the college wants to see how your application compares with applications submitted by students applying regular decision.
After considering your application in the regular decision round, you can be accepted, rejected or waitlisted. Here are a few things you can do to increase your chances of getting accepted.
4 THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU’VE BEEN DEFERRED
Follow the instructions in the deferral letter. Some colleges may ask you to write a letter to confirm your interest, which is another opportunity to express why you feel the college is a good fit for you.
Reach out to the admissions office. Keep communications positive, upbeat, and hopeful, no matter how disappointed you feel. If you are absolutely sure that you would attend the college if accepted in the regular decision round, say so.
Send an update on your midterm accomplishments, for example, grades showing an upward swing, awards, or new projects and activities inside or outside of the classroom.
Arrange for another letter of recommendation.
FOCUS ON YOUR BACKUP PLAN
Finish and submit applications to the schools on your list. Some students find the worst part of getting deferred is having to finish all of their other apps! See these tips for getting organized and finishing your applications on time.
GET EXCITED ABOUT YOUR OTHER SCHOOLS
Find out more about the other colleges on your list. Check out their college profiles on CollegeData and visit campuses if you can. You might discover a college that’s an even better fit than your first choice.
LOOK AT THE BRIGHT SIDE
You have the gift of time to look more closely at the other schools on your list and to make your college decision once you have been accepted. Some students even feel a wave of relief when they receive a deferral, either because they’re not 100% sure about their early decision college, or they applied early to take advantage of a higher admission rate for early applications without seriously evaluating whether or not the college is right for them.
“I liked Washington University in St. Louis but didn't love it. Yet I submitted my early decision application anyway, and I immediately regretted it," says Julian, a student profiled in CollegeData’s Road to College Student Stories. “In the ensuing month, I experienced huge waves of anxiety and dread.” When his deferral arrived, he was overjoyed.
Finally, hang in there. Deferrals may be an unpleasant bump on the road to college, but they are something many students experience. If you’ve created a strong list of safety, reach, and match schools that you know you’d be happy to attend, it’s likely that you’ll receive good news in the spring.
If you took a community college course in high school, do you need to submit those transcripts when applying?
Every college is different!
- Some want it by the due date
- Some want it soon after the due date
- Some only need you to Self-Report - and submit when admitted
You need to call or email the admissions if you can't find it on their website for each college you are applying to.

Are you applying to a college that requires a nomination from Sequoia for scholarships or programs?
Important Process Below:
When you are researching colleges to apply to, check to see if they have scholarships and programs that require nominations.
For example, Davidson College has the Belk Scholarships which provides 8 full-ride scholarships to students who are selected. Also, Washington University in St. Louis has the Danforth Scholars Program that awards partial and full-tuition scholarships based on merit and does not consider need as part of the award process. Both of these examples require being nominated in order to apply.
After you research your colleges, if you find a scholarship or program you want to be nominated for, complete this form three weeks prior to the nomination deadline to be considered.

Sticker Price vs. What You'll Actually Pay
So you’ve looked at a few types of schools and have seen their sticker prices (listed costs). For most students, there is still a BIG DIFFERENCE between the “sticker price” of a college and the actual amount they will end up paying.
The difference between sticker price and what you pay is the financial aid you receive. Financial aid—in short—is money that helps you pay for college.
Financial aid awarded to you is affected by two main factors:
Need: you and your family’s financial need
Merit: your academic performance and extracurricular activities
STICKER PRICE (LISTED COST) = Tuition & Fees + Food & Housing + Books + Miscellaneous Personal Expenses + Transportation
FINANCIAL AID = Grants + Scholarships + Loans + Work-Study
The difference between sticker price and what a student may pay can be big or small. For example, the listed
“sticker price” for the University of Notre Dame is $82,925
But look at what the average family cost is on the chart below
Parents: Some General Financial Aid Information at Sequoia High and CA Assembly Bill 132
- Students were given a FAFSA/CADAA Worksheet in their Social Studies Class. This is just as a guideline for what information you will need to have in order to complete the FAFSA/CADAA starting in December. (sorry for any confusion)
- The district will be sending out information about AB 132, that requires all public school districts and charter schools in California to confirm that all high school seniors have completed a FAFSA or CADAA, unless the student opts out
- If families do not want to complete the FAFSA/CADAA, you can go to the district's Financial Aid Resources webpage to complete an opt-out form (scroll all the way to the bottom of the page)
