Walnut High School Recognized as California Green Ribbon School
Walnut High School recently achieved a significant milestone by receiving a silver level California Green Ribbon School award from the California Department of Education. This recognition highlights the school's commitment to effective environmental education, reduced environmental impacts, and improved health and wellness within the school community. Led by sophomore Elise Chen and supported by Environmental Science Teacher Kathy May, Operations Manager Conchita Cawley, and Director of Maintenance Sam Sornoso, Walnut High School stood out among 41 schools nationwide at the award ceremony held at Claremont High School on April 30.
The school's efforts focused on multiple fronts, including sustainable landscaping with drought-resistant plants like California lilac and Baja fairy duster. This not only beautifies the campus but also reduces water consumption and carbon emissions.
Complementing these efforts, Walnut High School implemented a food composting system under Kathy May's guidance, turning food waste into organic fertilizers for school gardens. Additionally, water conservation measures such as low-flow fixtures, limited watering hours, and rainwater utilization contribute to a more eco-friendly campus environment. Moreover, the installation of solar panels in parking lots reflects the school's commitment to renewable energy solutions.
"Receiving the Green Ribbon Award is not for the recognition; more than that, it’s about raising awareness for the green movement and fostering a culture of sustainable living." Elise Chen said. "I am extremely grateful to get to be part of this milestone."
Walnut High School's recognition as a California Green Ribbon School underscores its dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability. Through ongoing collaboration and innovative initiatives, Walnut High School remains committed to exploring new avenues to support a more sustainable future. This dedication underscores the significance of responsible environmental practices in shaping a greener and healthier tomorrow.

No Student Lunch Deliveries: Due to various problems and safety issues, we do not allow student lunches to be delivered anywhere on campus. This includes deliveries made by parents, guardians, or external delivery services.
No Passing of Food Through the Fence: It is strictly prohibited to pass food, drinks, or any other items to students through the fence surrounding the school premises.
Prohibition of Outside Food Delivery Services: Services such as UBER Eats, DoorDash, and similar outside food delivery services are strictly prohibited from making deliveries to the school. Any food deliveries dropped off will be confiscated.
While we understand the importance of student nutrition, we encourage students to either utilize the free lunch options available at school or bring their lunch from home.
Your cooperation in adhering to these guidelines is essential for ensuring a safe and efficient learning environment for all.

Students without a 6th-period class must exit campus promptly after their 5th-period class. The designated exit point is the E-F gate.
