Dear Faculty and Staff of the CESW:
You are invited to lend your talents, perspectives, and experiences in discussing the possibility of hosting a conference around trauma informed practices/instruction and advocacy for our college's disciplines. Our Faculty, Prof. Staff and Alumni at the West Chester Chili Cook - Off!
Fiorenza's Food for Friends, a local non-profit, organized this year's West Chester Chili Cook - Off benefiting local food recovery. Hmmm, that name sounds familiar.... Dr. Laura Fiorenza, professor in the CESW WCU is the proud mother of the event's organizer as well as a super volume chili maker! Dr. Fiorenza, her son and other family members, including her daughter Darien and son-in law (WCU 2018 graduates), committed to saving this community event and continue the benefit it provided to so many. Barbara Leisenring, a former administrative assistant for the early and middle grades education department, and her husband joined the group in preparing for the chili cook-off event. Barbara assisted with can opening and vegetable peeling and cutting at the West Chester Area Senior Center
Our gratitude goes out to the Fiorenzas and the many WCU volunteers for accepting a huge challenge and recognizing the impact it has in the community. The article from the Daily Local News and some celebratory pictures, follow. What a wonderful example of the Ram Pride and Community involvement!

Note from the Dean
Hello Team,
I hope everyone is having a fantastic week! October has been busy, with the establishment of two new scholarships, the CSWE, PAC-TE, and CPED conferences, homecoming festivities, and the start of registration—on top of our regular classes! Whew! I'm exhausted just thinking about it!
As we head into November and the final stretch of the semester, please remember to take some time for self-care.
I also wanted to provide an update on our Fall enrollment data. The transition to Ramportal has made validating this data a bit complicated, and I'm still waiting for verified figures from IR. However, we can celebrate that preliminary data indicates we've met our average class size goal! Congratulations, everyone!
Registration Rally -- Monday, November 4, 2024: Sykes Ballrooms from 10AM to 3PM

AI and It's Role in Education
Hello CESW faculty and staff,
The field of artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving and has the potential to revolutionize various aspects of education, research, and administration. By forming this collaborative group, we aim to create a platform where faculty and staff members from all CESW departments can come together to explore the applications of AI in our academic community.
As a member of the AI Collaborative Group, you will have the opportunity to:
- Share expertise and ideas: Engage in discussions with colleagues who have a shared interest in AI and its applications in education and research.
- Collaborate on projects: Work together on interdisciplinary projects that leverage AI technology to address challenges and enhance teaching, learning, and administrative processes.
- Access resources and support: Gain access to resources, workshops, and training sessions aimed at enhancing your understanding of AI tools and techniques.
- Stay updated: Stay informed about the latest developments and trends in AI.
Whether you are an AI expert or just starting to explore the field, your participation in the AI Collaborative Group will contribute to building a vibrant community focused on harnessing the power of AI for the benefit of our university.
If you would like to participate in the CESW AI Collaborative Group, please complete this brief survey.

Experiential Learning (ExL) Survey
The 2024 Experiential Learning (ExL) Survey is open and collecting responses!
The Career Center is requesting your support in collecting as much data as possible from students between now and Friday, October 4th. The more data we collect, the better we can tell the WCU ExL story and provide more robust data to your department.
Please consider using the attached slide in class to encourage students to participate. Students do not need to have engaged in experiential learning to take the survey. The audience for this survey is sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate level students.
The data we collect allows us to…
- Better educate, encourage, and support students in their engagement in experiential learning
- Identify trends and remove barriers to student engagement in experiential learning
- Provide valuable insight to colleges and departments, both through our ExL Data Dashboard, and by request.

'Investigating the Impact of Video-based Analysis of Classroom"
Dr. Criswell, along with a multi-institutional team of teacher educators and researchers from across the country, was awarded a National Science Foundation Noyce Track 4 (Research) grant for a project titled, 'Investigating the Impact of Video-based Analysis of Classroom
Teaching on STEM Teacher Preparation, Effectiveness, and Retention.' As the title suggests, the project is focused on the use of video-based examinations of practice (i.e. video analysis and reflection) as a means of strengthening the pedagogical practices of pre- and early-in-service teachers. The particular emphasis of this project is to develop teacher candidates' capacity in noticing for equity, with the hope that these candidates design classrooms and learning experiences to give voice and agency to students. Ideally, the development of this capacity will support teacher candidates in being more effective practitioners and more likely to stay in the classroom.
If you use such video-based examinations of practice in your coursework, Dr. Criswell would enjoy talking to you about the project so that a professional learning community might eventually form at WCU in the College of Education and Social Work. That PLC would be a place to have conversations about productive approaches and tools to assist in our candidates to be the best educators – and most balanced individuals – that they can become.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Office of Educational Accessibility and Legal Requirements Update
Student success sent this information earlier via email, but it is so important we wanted to review it again.... "...Office of Educational Accessibility has moved! We are now located in Wayne Hall 107, the former home of Candidate Services. This means that OEA is now on a ground level, improving ease of access to the office....
... In an ongoing effort to support student success, the Office of Educational Accessibility (OEA) has some updates related to legal requirements imposed by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) concerning student accommodations. WCU is required to ensure that determinations on all student accommodations are made by the University administration, and not by individual faculty members. Thus, all accommodations including Modified Attendance Agreements, Assignment Deadline Flexibility, and Alternates to Presentation must be initiated by the student in OEA. Students who approach faculty members to negotiate accommodations are required by this legal guidance to be directed to the OEA. OEA will then work with faculty members on determining appropriate accommodations for the course. This is a procedural change in the way accommodations were handled previously. Of course, when such requests are made, OEA will be soliciting and carefully considering the input of each faculty member to understand the nature of the proposed accommodation and how it might affect the specific course and coursework at issue...." Please contact OEA if you have any questions.

Welcome to another year of growth, opportunity and discovery. As we embark on sharing our talents and fostering the talents of our new and returning students in the College of Education and Social Work, we hope the summer months have provided you with an opportunity for rest and rejuvenation.
What better way to begin the year than our Annual Kick-off Event, September 6, 2024, from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm in the Sykes Building! As a community, it is important that we come together and decide where and how we want to grow in the year ahead. Your voice, your ideas and your presence in this community drive the mission and growth of our institution. This annual event is an opportunity to inspire one another, challenge one another and support one another as we move forward into the new year.
We look forward to welcoming all faculty and staff to this event. In the unforeseen circumstance that you are unable to attend this event, please ensure you have a university-related reason or approved leave. Your participation impacts our community’s future.
Let us begin anew and celebrate the unique opportunities that lie ahead.
