Taylor's Message

On Wednesday, May 8, 2019 from 6pm-7:30pm PYDC is hosting “Taylor’s Message” at The Spire Center in Plymouth. This event is a free opportunity and is open to all parents, guardians, community members, and youth. The presentation covers important topics including substance use prevention, choices and consequences, how to be a better friend, and parenting/social host liability. Please consider joining us!

Hometown Clean Up - Saturday, May 4

The town-wide clean up in spring and fall has become a Plymouth tradition. With all of us pitching in we keep our parks, beaches, conservation lands, village centers and neighborhoods beautiful for people and wildlife. Families, neighbors, school groups, clubs, businesses, and organizations join in. It is a good way to nurture civic pride in our young people.

Help Raise Money for Students Visiting Japan

Paint Night June 5th at Cabby Shack

Parents of the student ambassadors headed to Japan this summer have organized a fundraiser to help offset the cost of the trip. Paint Night will be held at Cabby Shack on June 5th at 6:30 PM. The item is a serving tray and the host (MIY Studios) assures us everyone can do this well, as stencils and materials needed are provided and included in the price. We hope to see you all there. Pig Day!

This week Miss Megan and Miss Kim's room had a pig party! Their classrooms have been reading the Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems. Today's book was "Happy Pig Day!".Their students had a fun day making pink pig pancakes.

In other classrooms, students have been learning about spring, flowers, and bugs.

BFG Movie Night

As the final culmination of our One School, One Book Project, students and families were invited to attend a P.T.A. sponsored, BFG, movie night last Friday. There was a concession stand, and many students came in their PJ’s and brought their sleeping bags. A fun time was had by all!

Reader's Theatre

In library class with Ms. Ashley, students participated in Reader’s Theatre. They took turns retelling the story of Jack and the Beanstalk to understand why the giants were afraid of Jack. They used this opportunity to practice their PVLEGS (Poise, Voice, Life, Eye Contact, Gestures, and Speed.)

Chess

Mr. Battles runs a chess club after school every Wednesday. Great fun for All!

Kindness

Mrs. Brown is covering maternity leave for Ms. Czuch's first grade. Anyone who knows Mrs. Brown knows what a kind and generous person and teacher she is. We are lucky to have her at IBES.

Kindergarten Writers

Our Kindergarten students have been practicing persuasive writing and learning that their words can make a difference in the world. Students recently took a walking field trip to the post office and mailed letters to different audiences in order to acknowledge problems we see in the world, why it’s a problem and some ideas for how to fix it. Students are excited to have already received some responses!!

Homeland Security Dog Visit

Last week, Mrs. DeSantis and Mrs. Sherman were fortunate to have had a visit from Haven, a scent dog that works in Boston for Homeland Security. Haven's trainers, Sean and Sarah explained about Haven's job at Logan Airport where she identifies contraband substances in luggage at the international arrivals terminal. It was exciting for the students to be able to take part in a search simulation with Haven. Each student was given a backpack and Haven identified the backpacks that contained contraband materials such as cured meat, fruits, and plants. Afterward, the students got some service dog trading cards and were allowed to pet and spend time with Haven. They were fascinated to find out that Haven was a rescue dog only required a few months of training. Several students said that this was the best day that they had in 5th grade, others asked how they could have this job someday. They learned a lot about border security and invasive species which fit well into our science and civics units.

Art Show Coming to West

Mrs. Kershaw has been busy at work decorating the halls with West student's artwork. Hope to see you May 8th!

Beautification Project at PCIS

The PCIS 7th Grade Senators continue to beautify the front of PCIS. Thank you, Senators, for your work beautifying our school!

Learning About Ancient China

6th-grade students from the Burkhead/Chambers team presented their China projects to classmates. Students chose from a long list of potential topics, created a 3-d model relating to it, and gave an oral presentation. According to Shayne, who did his project on the Chinese use of rockets, he was not nervous about speaking to classmates because he practiced for homework and during school. Sophia chose kites for her project because the Chinese used them in many different ways, such as for festivals and for war. She found this to be a "no pressure" project; there was plenty of class time to finish the 3-d model and the presentations were given to just one person at a time.

Disappearing Coral

Why is the world's coral disappearing? 7th-grade students of Ms. Whitney attempted to answer that question through experimentation. Coral and antacid tablets are both made of calcium carbonate. After dropping a tablet into different acidic vinegar/water solutions, students timed how long it took the tablet to disappear. They concluded that as the world's oceans become more acidic, the coral reefs will disappear at a faster rate.

SkillsUSA State Competition

This weekend PNHS CCTE was represented by 16 students at the SkillsUSA State Competition in Marlboro, MA. Competitors earned the opportunity to compete by placing in the top 2 at the District competition held in February. The PNHS SkillsUSA chapter earned the Gold Level Chapter of Distinction for the Community service work completed this school year. State Medal winners were; Eric Chase receiving the bronze medal for Customer Service, Allison Varao receiving the Silver medal for Job Interview, and the team of Gabriela DeOliveira, Hope Manion, Rachael Peterson, and Brenna Tobin brought home the Gold Medal for Health Knowledge Bowl. The Health Knowledge Bowl Team will represent PNHS in Louisville, Kentucky in June at the SkillsUSA National Championship Competition. They competed with integrity and grace.

Plymouth North Fields Three International Finalists at DECA

Eighteen students from Plymouth North travelled to Orlando, Florida to compete against state and provincial event winners from every state in the US and Canada. The final results were very impressive with four of our students winning in the main round and continuing on as finalists. After fierce competition during the finalist round Brooke Petersen and Lis Levis won a top ten out of a field of 195 competitors in the Entrepreneurship Promotion Plan category.
