The Raptor Report
December 2024 - "Rolling Hills Sticks Together"
From the Principal
As we enter this holiday season, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the many things that bring joy and meaning to our lives—cherished moments with family and friends, shared meals with loved ones, and gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy. Here at Rolling Hills Elementary School, the Home of the Raptors, we are reminded daily of how special our community is. It’s a privilege to work in a place filled with the anticipation in children’s eyes, the creativity in their ideas, and the meaningful connections they form with their peers and teachers.
This season, we have so much to celebrate and appreciate. Our students are growing into collaborative and independent thinkers who demonstrate care and belonging for their classmates and the world around them. We are equally grateful for the unwavering support of our PTO and parents—you play a vital role in the success of our students and our school.
As the weather turns colder, consider curling up with your child and a good book. At Rolling Hills, we emphasize the importance of reading, comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking as essential skills for success in any career. In our digital age, reading remains a gateway to learning and discovery, with endless resources at our fingertips.
To foster understanding, the ultimate goal of reading, we encourage families to explore these simple tips together:
Always bring a book. Keep a book or magazine handy for those moments of waiting—at the doctor’s office, in line, or during errands.
Re-read favorites. Encourage your child to revisit beloved books and poems. Re-reading builds speed, accuracy, and confidence.
Ask about the story. Engage your child with questions like: What is the story about? Who are the characters? How does it connect to your life or other stories you’ve read?
Limit screen time. Carve out space for reading by managing TV and video game usage.
Choose the right books. Ask your child’s teacher or the library specialist for guidance on selecting books that match their reading level and interests.
Read together. Take turns reading aloud at bedtime—it’s a wonderful way to bond and share stories.
Encourage writing. Involve your child in everyday writing tasks like grocery lists, thank-you notes, or journaling. Let them use their phonics skills to practice spelling and letter sounds.
At Rolling Hills, we are proud of the partnership between our school, parents, and students in creating a thriving learning environment. Together, we are shaping a community where children grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
On behalf of the entire staff, I wish you a joyful, healthy, and memorable holiday season. Thank you for being a part of the Rolling Hills family!
Warm regards,
Dr. Ron Schlicht
Principal

Weather Related Closure Information
Winter weather is here! Be sure to review MASD's procedures for closing school due to extreme cold or unsafe roads.
Winter Clothing Policy
We want to review our school policy regarding clothing requirements for outdoor recess during the winter season.
- Jackets, hats and mittens are needed in cold weather.
- All students are required to wear snow/ski pants and changeable boots if they go off the blacktop and play or walk in the snow. If they do not have boots or snow pants they must stay on the blacktop
- Please make sure your child leaves the house with all his/her winter gear in the morning so that parents are not dropping off during the day and disturbing class.
- Please mark all outerwear with your child’s name.
- If the temperature is 0 or above the students will be going outside, so plan accordingly.
We appreciate your help in making sure your child is appropriately dressed.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Missing ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Parents, Volunteers and Visitors,
There are quite a few visitor and volunteer badges/lanyards missing from the Rolling Hills office. Please take a look at home, in your car, in your purse, etc. to see if you have any that may have accidentally made it out of our building. We understand how beautiful they are and how they compliment almost any outfit, but we ask that you please return them to
the front office at your earliest convenience.
Thank you!
School Counselor Note
Dear Families,
As a School Counselor, I strive to keep our students feeling safe and welcome at school, and so many of my Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons during the month of October and November focused on bullying prevention. I was excited to talk with students this fall about the importance of stopping bullying, being a kind friend, and celebrating differences.
Act Now! is a bullying prevention curriculum developed by the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. The Act Now! lessons will teach students how to be problem solvers when it comes to witnessing and/or experiencing bullying. During these interactive lessons, we used activities, videos, stories, and discussion to engage students in learning about friendship, diversity, managing emotions, and ways to prevent bullying. Some grades actually signed an anti-bullying agreement that was sent home!
Act Now! also offers a site for parents and guardians to learn more about bullying situations at school and how to best help your student navigate difficult situations with peers. The website has great suggestions on how to handle bullying in a way that aligns with what students learn in class. Here is the link to this helpful resource:

Please let me know if your family is interested in learning more.
Have a great holiday season!

Student Council
We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated to our successful community based “Adopt-A-Family” project that will support six families and 20 children through the Christmas Clearing Council of Waukesha County. Our collection took place November 12th – November 14th and we were able to raise $3,000.54, AND we will get to see Dr. Schlicht decorated like a Christmas Tree! We are grateful for the generosity of Rolling Hills’ students, staff, and families. In addition to our monetary donations, we received a very generous donation from a staff member of Culver's gift cards that will be given to the families as well as the older kids we are shopping for. Our annual shopping trek to Target on Sunset in Waukesha is set for Saturday, December 7th to purchase gifts. Target generously gives us 10% off of our total purchase price. Please know that your support for this worthwhile project, through your generous donations, truly makes a difference in the lives of others.
Additionally, the Student Council will coordinate a few December Spirit Days. The first, will take place on Wednesday, December 11th, centering on the theme, “Crazy Sweater Day” with the hopes of filling our school with lively holiday tops. Then, we hope you will join us as we celebrate FIVE Days of Holiday Cheer. We will spotlight seasonal clothing choices with holiday colors. We are truly thankful for your continued support of our Student Council! May your holidays be merry and bright!
The Raptor Way
In November, Dr.Schlicht’s announcements were about gratitude. Gratitude is a feeling of thankfulness and appreciation for the good things in life. This month, take some time to close your eyes and take a couple of minutes to think of the people and things you are thankful for. Students were encouraged to take time to think about all the people and things they are thankful for. How can they show someone else they are thankful? They can do a thank you note, do a free favor for someone, and just be thankful for life. Our duo of the month is: Bees and Honey. We can stick together like a bee sticks to their honey. Bees have to work hard to make their honey and have to put in a lot of effort and work. We celebrated our trimester 1 Raptor Way assembly on November 25th. Students were split and mixed up with different students and teachers to do an activity. Make sure you ask your child what they did! Students continue to earn ROAR cards for respectful, responsible, and safe behaviors and are enjoying all the fun things the ROAR store has to offer. We always look for donations for the ROAR store. You may send donations to school or contact Ms. Napierala. Thank you!
