Principal Message - Kanika A. Burks
Good Evening MCP: Lola Rowe North Families,
The heat will not stop us from paving the way to college and beyond! Thank you for making sure your scholars had a water bottle today. We were able to stay hydrated and focused throughout the day!
Scholars must be called by an MCP Carline Staff Member OR an Administrator to leave the building at the end of the day. Refrain from calling your scholar on their cell phone to come outside. It will only cause frustration because they are stopped and redirected to the gym until their name is called over the microphone. Please remind your scholars to sit quietly and listen for their names during dismissal. Remember the office is closed between 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm to support our dismissal process. If there is an emergency, please call my work cell phone (the number is below). If you have any questions, please contact me.

Reminders and Important Dates:
Life’s Work: Please check your scholar’s daily Life’s Work Sheet. Life’s Work is assigned daily and is linked to classroom instruction. The MCP expectation is for all scholars to complete their Life’s Work each night, have a family member sign it, and return it to school the following morning.
MAP Testing: Fall MAP testing is occurring the week of September 11th-15th in grades K5-8th. The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment is a computer adaptive test in Reading and Math and is used throughout the year to help students grow to their full potential. MAP assessments are given in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. The results of these assessments provide teachers with accurate, and actionable evidence to help target instruction for each student or group of students regardless of how far above or below they are from their grade level.
DIBELs Assessments: Beginning of the Year DIBELs Benchmark Assessments are occurring September 18th-28th in grades K5-2nd. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELs) is a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of literacy skills. They are designed to be short (one-minute) fluency measures that can be used to regularly detect risk and monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills in kindergarten through second grade.
myIGDIs: Beginning of the Year myIGDIs Benchmark Assessments are occurring September 5th-22nd in K4. The Individual Growth and Development Indicators (myIGDIs) is an assessment that helps early childhood educators identify learners who may need additional support to reach kindergarten-readiness benchmarks.
- Progress Reports: Progress Reports will be sent home weekly via email starting September 12th.

Sleep is Essential for Our Kids' Brains!!
During those hours of sleep, their minds grow, memories form, and learning takes root. When kids get enough quality sleep, they're like little sponges, absorbing knowledge and facing the day with bright, curious minds.
Research shows that well-rested kids perform better in school. They're more focused, alert, and ready to confront challenges. Sleep is crucial for performing well on tests and being more creative problem solvers.
If possible, please set consistent bedtimes and encourage good sleep habits. By doing so, we're giving our kids the gift of better learning.
If you're packing snacks or lunch for your scholar this week, consider including one or more items featured on the poster below. As we continue to emphasize the importance of brain food, especially during this crucial stage of your child's development, we encourage them to make mindful and nutritious food choices that support their growing minds.
Growing Minds Need Support With Regulation
At Milwaukee College Prep, we recognize that addressing our scholars' emotional needs is equally important as their academic ones. As a result, every classroom is equipped with designated spaces for scholars to use when they need a moment to regulate their emotions.
CALM CORNERS
- A calming corner is a small designated space within the classroom. The purpose of a calm corner is to help support self-regulation while keeping scholars in the classroom if they need a break from instruction time or group activity. This provides scholars an opportunity to reset themselves and return back to class ready and on a mission.
What can this look like at home?
At times, your child may experience moments of frustration, and there may not always be a specific place for them to retreat to. This holds true within the school building as well, where scholars are not always confined to their classrooms. In such situations, we empower our scholars by teaching them valuable strategies for self-calming. One of these strategies is outlined below.
Middle School News
Middle School Uniform Extension
We want to inform you of an important update regarding the deadline for obtaining our Middle School scholars' Monday and Wednesday professional attire. After carefully considering various factors, we have decided to extend the deadline for scholars to acquire their professional attire.
The new deadline for obtaining the Monday and Wednesday professional attire will be moved from September 6th to October 2nd. This decision has been made in response to the unexpected delay in the time for parents to place orders and receive the attire. Our primary goal is to ensure that all scholars have ample time to acquire their attire and are well-prepared for the upcoming schedule.
We understand that ordering and receiving the attire has taken longer than anticipated, and we want to ensure that this extension allows everyone to plan and obtain the necessary clothing adequately. We believe that extending the deadline will assist in alleviating any potential concerns and ensuring that all scholars have the appropriate professional attire.
We apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause and appreciate your understanding as we work to provide the best experience for our scholars. If you have any questions or require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
