Dear PUSD Community,
The Eaton Fire has brought unimaginable losses to our students, families, and staff. Our hearts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.
The health and safety of our PUSD community remain our highest priority as we navigate the significant impact of the fire on so many of our students, families, and staff. Nearly half of our employees reside within the evacuation zone. Many of them, like so many of our students and families, have lost their homes. The fire is at 3 percent containment. Mandatory and warning evacuation orders remain in effect, and air quality is characterized as “unhealthy.” These conditions, combined with damage to school facilities and safety concerns, make it impossible to reopen schools for in-person learning at this time.
After careful assessment and consultation with local emergency management officials, the Superintendent’s Leadership Team has determined that in-person learning will not resume next week. Schools will remain closed from January 13-17, 2025.
During the week of January 13-17, 2025:
Student Learning: During the week of January 13-17, 2025, PUSD students will have access to self-directed, online learning options. These learning options, by grade span (elementary) and subject area (secondary), are hosted on Canvas and are accessible via Clever and directly at this link: http://gopusd.com/learning
These learning options support students’ continuity of learning, engagement, and their social-emotional well-being. Please note that these are optional for students. They will not be graded, nor will they be required. Our goal is to help our students redirect their focus from the tragedy our communities are facing, provide them with a sense of routine, and give them the opportunity to engage in skill development during this difficult time.
Technology: We are taking inventory and gathering replacement devices for students and staff and will send information out early next week.
Meals: PUSD’s Grab and Go meal distribution centers began operating today and will continue to provide meals for children and youth in our community weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at three locations
Staff: Teachers will not be required to provide direct instruction next week, and school site staff will not report to campuses. Essential central office staff will report to the district’s Education Center as needed.
Campuses: Schools and campuses remain closed while we clean and prepare them. The fire is 3% containment. Our dedicated maintenance and operations teams is working tirelessly during this unprecedented natural disaster.
Support: Our community partners are providing support for students and families in a variety of ways. The Pasadena Educational Foundation (PEF), in collaboration with PUSD, is stepping in to assist and has reactivated its pased.org/responsefund. Contributions will help address immediate needs and ensure resources reach our schools and families as they navigate this crisis. PEF is providing support through fundraising, mobilizing volunteers, and coordinating with community partners to address immediate needs and deliver resources where they will have the greatest impact.
We understand the significant challenges this decision presents to our families. However, ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of our entire PUSD community must remain at the forefront of our decision.
Our community is strong, resourceful, and resilient. We will rebuild and honor the beauty and shared history of our schools and neighborhoods while incorporating modern enhancements. We will build a future that reflects the strength and spirit of our community and demonstrates the Power of Us.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Blanco, Ed.D.
Superintendent
