SPOTLIGHT: Celebrating Creative and Educational Opportunities for Young Learners
The third-grade scholars of Mrs. Victoria Wilson at Freeman Elementary were thrilled with their recent visit from Mr. Jones! This school year has been filled with fun and engaging hands-on learning experiences that have left a lasting impact on the students.
Thanks to partnerships with the Sloan Museum and the Flint Institute of Arts, the classroom buzzed with activity as scholars dove into fascinating science and art projects right at their desks. These partnerships provided a wealth of creative and educational opportunities that sparked curiosity and excitement among the young learners.
Venturing beyond the classroom, Mrs. Wilson's scholars enjoyed a series of memorable outdoor adventures. They explored the Ligon Outdoor Center and Spicer's Orchard, where nature became their classroom. The scholars got up close with local wildlife and gained valuable insights into the natural world around them.
A highlight of the year was their visit to the Detroit Zoo on May 3rd. The third graders were delighted to see iconic animals like zebras, giraffes, and gorillas. They also participated in a learning lab, where they studied penguins and collected valuable data about the fascinating birds. This immersive experience brought the zoo to life and provided an exceptional opportunity for discovery.
Reflecting on their third-grade year, the scholars expressed their gratitude for the learning opportunities and the new friendships formed throughout the journey. They learned valuable lessons not only in the classroom but also in the community, embracing the diverse and enriching experiences that shaped their growth.
As Mrs. Wilson's class wraps up their third-grade adventures, they are thankful for the hands-on learning and camaraderie that defined their year. These experiences have paved the way for continued curiosity and learning in the future.

Doyle Ryder Family Night Poetry Slam: A Celebration of Creativity and Community
On Wednesday, April 17, the gym at Doyle Ryder Elementary School echoed with the vibrant rhythm of words and the spirit of community as the school hosted its much-anticipated Family Night Poetry Slam. Welcoming scholars from the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, along with their families, the event promised an evening of artistic expression, camaraderie, and fun-filled activities. At the heart of the Poetry Slam was the opportunity for scholars to showcase their creativity by reading and performing original poems. From heartfelt reflections to imaginative narratives, each piece offered a glimpse into the unique perspectives and talents of the young poets. Guided by their teachers and inspired by their peers, participants took to the stage with confidence and some with encouragement, all captivating the audience with their words.
Adding to the excitement of the evening was the presence of a Special Guest, none other than the renowned poet and performer Mama Sol. Known for her dynamic performances and empowering message, Mama Sol brought extra energy and inspiration to the event, engaging both young and old with her powerful words and magnetic stage presence. But the Poetry Slam was not just about poetry; it was a celebration for the whole family. Attendees were treated to a feast for the senses, with free food tantalizing taste buds and raffles offering an array of enticing prizes. Goodie bags filled with treats and door prizes added to the excitement, ensuring every guest left smiling.
In recognition of their participation and creativity, each scholar performer received a custom t-shirt commemorating the event. These shirts served as a memento of their experience and a symbol of pride in their artistic achievements. Beyond the thrill of the performances and the allure of the prizes, the Poetry Slam served as a testament to the power of community and the importance of fostering creativity in education. By providing a platform for scholars to express themselves and share their voices, Doyle Ryder Elementary School reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals who are confident in their abilities and connected to their community.
The event was sponsored by the Literacy Grant Team: Heather Nassar - Teacher, LaShaunda Warren – Teacher, Kathy Roberts – Family Engagement Facilitator, Dr. Natoya Coleman – Principal, and DeLynn Smith – FCS Curriculum Development Specialist: Humanities. A big shout out to the amazing Doyle-Ryder staff members who showed up in force to support our Family Night Poetry Slam! Your presence and enthusiasm added an extra layer of magic to the event, creating an atmosphere of warmth and encouragement for our young poets and their families. From cheering on the performers to helping with logistics behind the scenes, your dedication and support made the evening truly special. Thank you for embodying the spirit of community and for being such wonderful role models for our students. Your commitment to fostering creativity and connection is truly inspiring! It serves as a testament to the teamwork with the entire Doyle Ryder team.
As the echoes of applause faded and families departed with memories to cherish, the Family Night Poetry Slam left an indelible mark on all who attended. It was more than just an event; it was a celebration of imagination, expression, and the bonds that unite us all.
Spotlight: Southwestern Classical Academy
Southwestern Classical Academy Scholars Shine at State Solo and Ensemble Festival
On Friday, April 12, the talents of Southwestern Classical Academy were on full display as three students took the stage at the prestigious State Solo and Ensemble Festival. Months of dedication and hard work culminated in stellar performances that left an indelible mark on the audience.
After earning their spots at this esteemed event in January, A’vionna Laboy, John Lynch, and Micaiah Brown approached the stage with confidence and poise. Each scholar was tasked with singing both a piece in a foreign language and one in English, showcasing their versatility and mastery of vocal technique. Additionally, they were required to demonstrate their sightreading skills by interpreting a short, unfamiliar passage on the spot.
For A’vionna Laboy and John Lynch, this marked their inaugural appearance at the State Solo and Ensemble Festival. Despite it being their first time, their performances resonated profoundly with the judges, both earning a Division 1 rating, denoting excellence in their delivery and interpretation.
Micaiah Brown, no stranger to the State Solo and Ensemble Festival, once again proved his exceptional talent. With previous experience under his belt, Brown’s performance was nothing short of extraordinary, earning him yet another Division 1 rating. Remarkably, he fell just one point shy of a perfect score, a testament to his unwavering commitment to musical excellence.
Flint Community Schools and the entire Southwestern Classical Academy community join in congratulating A’vionna Laboy, John Lynch, and Micaiah Brown on their outstanding achievement at the state level. Their dedication, passion, and artistry have brought honor to themselves and their school. Their performances serve as a shining example of the caliber of talent nurtured within the halls of Southwestern Classical Academy, inspiring future generations of musicians to reach for the stars.
As these scholars continue to pursue their musical aspirations, their success at the State Solo and Ensemble Festival will undoubtedly serve as a milestone in their artistic journeys, fueling their passion for music and setting the stage for even greater achievements in the future.

- Christian F. and Coryonoo P. also showcased their adeptness in professional skills by winning 3rd and 5th places, respectively, in the Interviewing category. These recognitions underline their readiness for future career challenges and opportunities.
A Team Effort
ALA is incredibly proud of the achievements of Christian, Maurtrell, Maya, Coryonoo, and Donovan, as well as the guidance and support provided by Mrs. Koronka and Ms. Dixon. These accolades reflect not just individual excellence but also the nurturing academic and extracurricular environment at ALA that fosters comprehensive scholar development.
