As you know, I spent the first semester intentionally listening and learning as much as possible about our schools and community. We held several listening sessions that allowed me to hear from stakeholders across our schools and community. I am pleased to share a report of the highlights and opportunities for growth that I learned about from the vast input I received, as well as next steps in using this input to establish strategic priorities. You will find the Superintendent Entry Plan Report on the LOSD website. Thank you to all who participated in this process. I look forward to continuing to listen, and to building on the foundation of excellence in LOSD.

We suspect someone very motivated to have a "snow day" created a fake LOSD Twitter account, making false announcements about school being canceled due to inclement weather. The fake account was taken down Wednesday night. This incident serves as a reminder about how to be sure it's LOSD notifying you of school closures and delays.

When in doubt, double check multiple sources. You will be notified through text, voicemail, email, Facebook and Twitter: @LOSD_Proud, www.losdschools.org, and the LOSD app. Please click here for instructions on downloading the app. The announcement will also run on the local TV broadcasts along the bottom of the screen.

Mark your calendar for Wednesday Jan. 22, 2020, for registration and information night for students starting kindergarten in the 2020-2021 school year.

Registration for kindergarteners, and all students who are new to LOSD, will open online that day at losdschools.org/domain/63.

An information night, Kindergarten Counts, will be hosted at each elementary school that evening, 6-7 p.m. Kindergarten Counts will provide parents and guardians an opportunity to meet the principal, kindergarten teachers, and other parents. You will learn about several upcoming opportunities for your new student between now and the first day of school.

Plan to register and attend Kindergarten Counts at your student's resident elementary school. Visit losdschools.org to verify. LOSD welcomes kindergarteners who will be five years old by Sept. 1.

Learn about high school experiences from the principals, counselors and students at upcoming open houses for current eighth graders. Parents and students are welcome.

Help spread the word! Online registration is opening Jan. 22 for all students who will be new to LOSD in the 2020-2021 school year. If you know anyone who is new to the area, please be sure to tell them.

ParentVUE and the online registration portals for LOSD are now available in English, Simplified Chinese, Korean, and Spanish. These are the four most common languages of our district families.

LOSD is currently accepting applications for one open position on the Legal Budget Committee. The Legal Budget Committee consists of members of the school board and five citizen members who are charged with reviewing and approving the budget for the upcoming school year. Citizen members are appointed to three-year terms and typically meet three to four times in the spring. The application can be found at: https://or01813384.schoolwires.net/Page/2084 and is due Feb. 6, by 5 p.m.

LOSD is seeking more feedback to help inform how we invest the grant funds from Oregon's Student Success Act.

All parents, guardians, teachers, staff and high school students are encouraged to complete the survey, which will be email to all community stakeholders next week. The survey asks you to rank investment possibilities based on what you think could provide the greatest impact on student success, particularly for historically underserved groups of students.

These possibilities are based on input provided in the first community engagement survey conducted last fall. In the fall of 2019, more than 3,000 students, staff, parents and guardians, and community members identified needs, desired improvements, and potential investments. This input served as a starting point for dialogue and feedback about how LOSD may investment SSA grant funding.

The Boundary Review Committee has begun its work. This superintendent committee is comprised of principals and parents from each elementary school as well as parents of students attending each middle and high school. They will be meeting through mid-March to develop a recommendation on how to redraw elementary school boundaries starting in the 2020-2021 school year.

Additionally, the boundary committee will be hosting open houses on Feb. 5 at Lakeridge High School and Mar. 4 at Lake Oswego High School, 6-8 p.m. to share current thinking and gather your feedback.

Join parents and guardians for a night with Dr. James Sanders, Psy.D, Assistant Director of Student Services/Clinical Psychologist for LOSD to learn about "Collaborative Problem Solving, The Basics: Skill Not Will."

Focus becomes teaching children lagging skills and helping children and their adult caretakers learn to resolve problems in a collaborative, mutually satisfactory manner.

“Challenging” behaviors

Can be: screaming, swearing, defying, hitting, spitting, throwing things, breaking things, crying, running, withdrawing

• Challenging behaviors are a way for children to let us know they’re struggling

• Challenging behavior is best understood as the byproduct of lagging thinking skills

• INSTEAD OF as attention-seeking, manipulative, limit-testing, or a sign of poor motivation

• Challenging behavior is best addressed by teaching children the skills they lack

• INSTEAD OF through reward and punishment programs and intensive imposition of adult will

As we anticipate a move out of the current school building and into a new Lakeridge Middle School in fall 2020, LOSD wants to honor the stories and experiences that have taken place at 4700 Jean Road over the years. Whether you have memories from the Bryant, Waluga, Lakeridge Junior High or Lakeridge Middle School days, we want to hear from you.

Help LMS Theatre Arts with a salute to the lives impacted by this community institution. We are looking for real stories and memories from people who were/are students, staff, parents of students of our school. Poignant, funny or just interesting stories are welcome as long as they're middle school appropriate. If your story is selected, the creative writing class will dramatize it for the Theatre arts department to produce as a spring play in 2020. Not all submissions will be selected, but we hope this can be part of a fitting celebration of this building’s impact on our community from 1962 to 2020.

Second grade students from River Grove wrote persuasive letters to Dr. Lora de la Cruz, encouraging the elimination of straws in LOSD. Dr. de la Cruz conveyed that she was impressed with the students' research and fact-based messaging, and has let us know that the district is actively seeking alternative solutions. Information will be communicated to all elementary schools as changes are made, but we wanted to acknowledge and celebrate our students' courage and activism. Student advocacy led to a big step toward LOSD being more environmentally-friendly. Way to go River Grove students and Green Team!

Rowing season begins next month and registration is open. Lake Oswego Rowing Club is partnered with the City of Lake Oswego and LOSD Community School. For information, go to www.lorowing.com.

Ilovelakeoswego has moved behind the "green house" located on the far North corner of Lake Oswego High School, 2301 Hazel Road. ILoveLakeOswego is a student managed, donation based clothing closet for students enrolled in Lake Oswego School District.

LOSD middle and high school students created the organization to benefit families who cannot regularly afford to buy new clothes, with the goal of helping foster confidence for a successful experience at school.
