Escuela Manzo 2024
Dear Manzo Families,
We had an amazing turn-out at our Boo Bash, and Halloween parade. Thank you for partnering with us as we continue celebrating children. The Arizona Department of Education recently released Manzo's school letter grade. We are excited to announce that we moved up a letter grade and we are now a letter B. We are excited for all the learning that is happening at Manzo and we hope to continue fostering a love for learning for our Bobcats so we can continue seeing academic growth.
Sincerely,
Sra. Maytorena

Letter Grade FAQs
What does each letter grade mean?
A (excellent): Distinguished performance on the statewide assessment, significant student growth, high four-year graduation rates, students on track to proficiency; overall performance is significantly higher than state average.
B (highly performing): High performance on statewide assessment and/or significant student growth and/or higher four-year graduation rates and/or moving students to proficiency at a higher rate than the state average.
C (performing): Adequate performance but needs improvement on some indicators, such as proficiency, growth or graduation rate.
D (minimally performing): Inadequate performance in proficiency, growth and/or four-year graduation rate relative to the state average.
F (failing): Systematic failures in proficiency, growth and graduation rates (below 67%); performance is in bottom 5% of the state.
What do the grades measure? Five quantifiable factors go into the grades.
● Student growth from year to year. Individual students are compared year to year, rather than comparing one class to the previous year’s class. For elementary schools, growth measured in grades 3-8 accounts for 50% of a school’s grade. For high schools, growth measured in grades 9-11 accounts for 20% of a school’s letter grade.
● Proficiency on the statewide assessment, AASA or ACT.
● English language proficiency and growth (as measured by AZELLA).
● Indicators measuring if an elementary student is ready for success in high school and high school students are ready for success in post-secondary settings.
● High school graduation rates.

SEL
Social Emotional Lessons (SEL) are designed to give students another technique to deal with big feelings as they learn how to regulate themselves and their emotions.
The basic premise is that when something happens that makes us angry, our angry spot grows. To get our angry spot back to a manageable size and back to calm, we…
1. Tap our angry spots (our fingers, starting with our pinky) to our peaceful spot (our thumb)
2. Count as we go (“1,2,3,and 4”)
3. Then go back while saying “tap, tap, tap, and tap once more”.
4. Finally, we fill our lungs with peaceful air and blow out love and care.
This is often a first step for students to begin realizing they can regulate their own emotions. They begin to learn to recognize their anger and with practice, can provide themselves, or their friends and classmates, with reminders to calm their anger before acting. It takes practice and reinforcement! The goal is to have one more tool in our toolbox for helping kids realize they can learn to calm themselves down before choosing a course of action.

Lecciones Socioemocionales
