What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
'Rouge' by Mona Awad is my latest strange gem I've found on the @libby.app! Fans of the movie 'Death Becomes Her' will instantly love this dark read; it dives deep into the beauty industry and the relationship between mothers and daughters when the daughter always feels like the ugly duckling.
"Snow White meets Eyes Wide Shut in this surreal descent into the dark side of beauty, envy, grief, and the complicated love between mothers and daughters. With black humor and seductive horror, Rouge explores the cult-like nature of the beauty industry—as well as the danger of internalizing its pitiless gaze. Brimming with California sunshine and blood-red rose petals, 'Rouge' holds up a warped mirror to our relationship with mortality, our collective fixation with the surface, and the wondrous, deep longing that might lie beneath." ~Goodreads.com (3.54 rating)
Happy reading, friends!
When we heard there's a live-action 'How to Train Your Dragon' movie coming out this summer, we knew we had to read the book before hitting the theater. With all the driving to grad parties and extracurriculars lately, it was the perfect excuse to turn car time into story time.
Written by Cressida Cowell, 'How to Train Your Dragon' follows the journey of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, a quiet and thoughtful boy who's also the son of the Viking chief. In a world that values loud bravery, how is Hiccup going to capture and train a dragon—and pass the initiation test?
This adventurous and hilarious book had us cheering for Hiccup the whole way. Highly recommend for families who want a fun, heartwarming listen (or read!) before the movie hits the big screen!
A child's yellow vest with $750 cash sewn into the lining...A neglected painting set on the curb at a neighborhood rummage sale...A large equine skeleton stored in the archives of the Smithsonian. In 'Horse,' author Geraldine Brooks blends these three elements into a compelling braid of a story that takes us back to 1850s Kentucky and beyond. Based on the true story of the legendary racehorse Lexington, this book centers on themes of race and of art as a medium for social change. I highly recommend this book for lovers of historical fiction. It currently has 4.26/5 stars on goodreads.com, and we will be discussing it this Saturday, June 14th at our library's Community Book Club.
Happy reading,
Kelly Henkle, Library Director
