FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear Edison Families,
If you were ever wondering how your generous contributions to the Santa Monica Education Foundation (SMED) are making a significant impact at Edison, this week is a good example.
Established to foster equity across our district's schools, SMED relies on the support of all Santa Monica families. These donations enable the foundation to provide equitable programs and provide each school the resources to address its unique needs through a Stretch Grant.
In addition to funding our dedicated Instructional Assistants, SMED also supports PS Arts (Public School Arts), allowing each school to select the artistic discipline that best suits its students. At Edison, we have consistently chosen Theater, recognizing its remarkable ability to enhance language skills and build confidence. We are fortunate to have Martha Ramirez Oropeza, our theater teacher, who has passionately taught Theater in Spanish for nearly two decades. Theater classes will begin this week!
This year, our Stretch Grant is allocated to hiring a garden teacher and acquiring essential materials for our learning garden. Sustaining a vibrant garden requires careful planning and dedicated oversight, which is why we need a garden teacher to guide our students’ engagement. We are thrilled to welcome Azita Banu, who will ensure both our garden and our students flourish. Garden classes will begin this week!
Additionally, our Stretch Grant funds will fund:
- Scholastic News: A children’s newspaper that fosters literacy.
- RazKids: A bilingual digital reading program tailored for primary students.
- Achieve 3000: A bilingual digital reading platform for upper-grade students.
- Mystery Science: Engaging videos and activities that bring science to life for our primary learners.
- Discovery Education: Captivating videos that cover a range of subjects for upper-grade students.
- Multicultural Books: Diverse literature for classrooms and libraries.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Santa Monica Education Foundation. Your support is truly enriching the educational experience for our students.
With gratitude,
Directora Ipiña

Theater Classes Start this week (TK-5)
Thanks to the Santa Monica Education Foundation, Edison will continue to have funding for a semester of PS Arts. Our art of choice at Edison has always been Theater in Spanish due to it's natural opportunity to develop oral language skills and confidence in Spanish We have been so fortunate to have had a the same talented theater teacher, Maestra Ramirez Oropeza, who in addition to being part of the teatro campesino tradition in Mexico is also an accomplished muralist (and has painted several of the murals on campus). Maestra Martha is able to weave culture, social justice, and fun into our theater program. All classes will have a culminating play performance for parents at the end of the semester in the theater room. As is tradition, our 5th graders will take their performance to the big stage and perform in our Cafetorium. We are looking forward to seeing our students Spanish language and theater skills expand this school year with the support of Maestra Martha!
Garden Classes Start This Week (2nd & Preschool)
Thanks again to the Santa Monica Education Foundation, Edison is able to fund a garden teacher to maximize learning opportunities for our students in our Learning Garden. At Edison, we strive to provide our students with hands on opportunities to learn about the world and we are so fortunate to have a Learning Garden space for that to happen. We were lucky to find our garden teacher, Azita Banu, who is trilingual (Spanish, English, Farsi), experienced in teaching garden classes in schools, and is also an artist. She will come on Tuesdays and provide classes for our primary students in 10 week sessions. Our first 10 weeks will include our 2nd graders and preschool students. Our 3rd-5th graders will have also have an opportunity to learn with Azita in the garden during a lunchtime Garden Club (this will begin in a few weeks). Can;t wait to see what blossoms in the garden this year with Maestra Azita.

Students will view these tables on Thursday, October 10th. So far we have 10 countries represented: Guatemala, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, El Salvador, España, Cuba, Bolivia, Mexico, Bolivia.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
AM Drop Off Help Needed
We are still in need of parent volunteers to help with the AM drop off zone on Virginia Avenue from 8:00-8:30 am. All you need to do is check in at the office at 7:55 am, get an orange vest and then stand at the curb, open car doors, and greet children with a smile and "Buenos días". The more people we have, the faster and safer it will be. It's a wonderful way to start everyone's day!
If you can help at least one day/week, please contact our AP Aída Díaz (adiaz@smmusd.org).
