7th Grade Math in Action:Real-World Problem Solving with the Pythagorean Theorem
This week, Mrs. Mannausau’s 7th grade math students explored the Pythagorean Theorem, learning that in a right triangle, the sum of the squares of the legs equals the square of the hypotenuse (a² + b² = c²). Once students grew confident using the formula, Mrs. Mannausau surprised them mid-week with a real-world challenge: “How long is it from this corner of the room to the opposite one? You can’t use rulers—just your brains and each other. Go!”
Students responded with creativity and enthusiasm. One measured with their feet, another used their own height and inched across the floor, and several drew diagrams on the whiteboard. While the early attempts were comical, they showcased strong problem-solving and collaboration.
With a few hints from Mrs. Mannausau—and the discovery that the floor tiles were 12 inches by 12 inches—students eagerly counted tiles, applied the Pythagorean Theorem, and solved the challenge. The activity wrapped up with Mrs. Mannausau sharing how she once used the same theorem to measure her right triangle-shaped garden. This led naturally into a lesson on the distance formula, which students began to derive themselves with a little guidance.
It was a fun, engaging way to connect math to the real world and build confidence through hands-on learning.

Bronco Musicians Explore Chicago on Unforgettable Trip
Mrs. Swanson, Mr. True, and our talented band and choir students embarked on an exciting and educational school trip this May.
Day 1 kicked off with a Music Workshop at St. Scholastica, followed by a visit to the Field Museum of Natural History.
Day 2 brought more adventure with stops at the Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier, Ferris Wheel rides, and a round of mini golf. The group enjoyed a classic Chicago dinner at Giordano’s before ending the day with a breathtaking performance by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Day 3 included a visit to the Museum of Science and Industry, a stop at the iconic Chicago Bean, and a trip to the John Hancock 360 Experience (despite some cloudy skies). The grand finale: dinner and a show at Medieval Times.
Now loaded up and headed home, our Broncos return with memories of a trip filled with music, learning, and fun.
A huge thank-you to Mrs. Swanson, Mr. True, our community sponsors and all the volunteers and chaperones who made this amazing experience possible!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
At FHS and FES, we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health. This May, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we're taking time to recognize the importance of emotional well-being for all students, staff, and families.
Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act—and taking care of it helps us learn, connect with others, and grow. Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing resources, hosting wellness activities, and encouraging conversations about managing stress, building resilience, and supporting one another.
Let’s work together to create a community where it’s okay to not be okay—and where asking for help is a sign of strength.
Together, we can break the stigma and build a healthier, more compassionate school environment for everyone.
Lost Something? It Might Be Found!
Hey students and families! Our Lost and Found is overflowing with jackets, water bottles, lunch boxes, and more. If you’ve misplaced something lately, there’s a good chance it’s waiting to be reunited with you! Stop by and take a quick look—you never know what forgotten treasures you might find. Let’s clear out the clutter and help these lost items find their way home!
Conflict and Bullying
Please talk to a trusted adult if you or a friend are struggling with conflict, bullying. We have attached some resources below as a guide. When we bring a community together, conflicts inevitably arise. If the conflict persists into bullying or harassment it is imperative that students and adults work together to make it stop. At FHS we take this seriously and will thoughtfully and carefully investigate each incidence, help resolve conflict, and address bullying. Everyone deserves to feel safe at school!
