Hello ALA Family,
My name is Anna Luna and I am the School Social Worker. Below is a flyer for a series I call 'Let's Taco 'Bout It' where I research and share different topics each week. Inspired by the true story of the Cleveland teenagers—Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster—who created Superman.
Jerry and Joe were typical high school Geeks: the popular kids ignored them, the jocks picked on them and the girls didn’t know they were alive. Brought together by their love of pulp magazines and science fiction (then called scienti-fiction ), they funneled their frustrations as high school outcasts into creating comic characters they dreamed would one day make them famous as comic strip artists. And it was while they were still in high school that they created a character that would become a cultural icon—and the most universally recognized fictional character of the 20th century: Superman! Inspired by the true story of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster—the creators of Superman—award-winning playwright Rob. Lauer has created a comic fable about growing up. The frustration of being an outsider, the excitement of connecting with someone who “gets you,” the thrill of creating something new, and the pain of losing what you’ve created—all of this is brought to life in “Geeks & Gangsters.”

Give us your Suggestions
ALA loves feedback from our parents, and we have made it easier than ever to ask questions or give us suggestions.
You will find at each front desk (Elementary, Junior High and High School) a sign that says I have a question or I have a suggestion.
There is a form that will give you the option to ask Mr. Morley, or any of our principals questions. Also on that form you will be able to give us suggestions that may help or improve your student's experience here at ALA.
Just simply fill out the form and drop it into the suggestion box. You can remain anonymous if you choose.
Answer to your questions will either be answered in the Eagle News, or you will receive an answer if you have given us your email address.
We are looking forward to your questions or suggestions!
ELEMENTARY INFORMATION
Elementary White Ribbon Week January 27-30.
Dear Parents,
We are excited to announce that next week is White Ribbon Week, a week dedicated to teaching our students important concepts of internet safety in a fun and engaging way. Each day, we will focus on a different internet safety topic, and we encourage students to participate in the spirit of the week by wearing specific colors that represent each concept.
Here’s the breakdown of the week:
Monday - Wear BLACK clothing
Topic: Personal Information
We will teach students NOT to share personal details like their full name, address, phone number, or school name online without permission from a trusted adult. The goal is for students to keep their identity safe, just like a Ninja!
Activity: Students will make their own Ninja headbands to remind them to stay "undercover" and protect their identity.
Tuesday - Wear BLUE clothing
Topic: Passwords
Students will learn how to create strong, unique passwords and the importance of keeping them private, only sharing them with their parents or guardians.
Activity: Students will design their own "locks" to symbolize keeping their information secure.
Wednesday - Wear GREEN clothing
Topic: Cyberbullying AwarenessOn Thursday, we’ll talk about how to handle cyberbullying by encouraging students to GO talk to a trusted adult if they experience or witness bullying online.
Activity: Students will participate in a Traffic Light Activity where they learn how to identify “green light” (safe) actions online.
Thursday - Wear RED clothing
Topic: Digital FootprintWe will discuss how everything students do online leaves a digital footprint and how it can impact their future. The rule is simple: Be Kind!
Activity: Students will design shoes to symbolize walking carefully online, leaving positive footprints behind.
Each day, students will also watch a brief 1-minute video from Jaime, our STEM Director, explaining the concept of the day.
We’re looking forward to a week of learning, fun, and meaningful activities as we help our students become responsible digital citizens.

Additional Carpool Information
Dear Parents,
It’s been wonderful having students back on campus after Christmas break. Our students are currently taking mid-year assessments, and are showing great progress and growth! We are excited to share the details of this with you during our Parent Conferences. Thank you for all your support at home with helping your students with homework, project, or assignments.
We would like to highlight a couple of reminders regarding carpool. Please note the following items:
Please be mindful of those parents who patiently waited in line for carpool by not cutting into the line.
Please don't park in places that aren't marked parking places
Starting Monday, Jan 27, the back parking lot will not be available as a pick up option. Please speak with your student about another pickup location. Thank you for your attention to this.
If you have any questions or concerns about this please email either Principal Anderson (randerson@americanleadership.net) or Vice Principal Stoney (kstoney@americanleadership.net)

SECONDARY INFORMATION
A Note for our Secondary Principal - Amanda Kuhnz (has important dates)
ALA Families,
Here we are more than halfway through the school year. We are more excited than ever to be associated with you and your students! We love your kiddos! They make us so proud to be educators!
First we are revving up for White Ribbon Week this week, Jan. 27-30. This week is dedicated to raising awareness among our students of online safety, cyberbullying, indecent media, screen time and emotional wellness as it relates to technology use. We want to equip our students with the tools to navigate the internet in a safe way. We will be having some of our experts in online safety address important questions like:
- What if your friends at school are sharing an embarrassing photo of another student?
- What if a popular post online tells you to damage property?
- What if you saw something shocking online and can't stop thinking about it?
- What if your friend is posting suicidal messages online?
We hope that they learn something from these messages that encourage them to uphold the values we embrace here at ALA, to be respectful, have integrity, exercise service, pursue excellence, be unified, and represent patriotism (R.I.S.E. U.P.)
We would also like to share a resource for you at home: https://namle.org/a-parents-guide-to-media-literacy/
White Ribbon Week will end with a white out spirit day on Thursday, Jan. 30.
Second, we have Open House coming up on Wednesday, Feb. 5 from 5-7pm. Join us for tours and an opportunity to brag about our students. Invite your friends too!
Next, we have Parent Teacher Conferences on Friday, Feb. 7 from 12:30-5:30pm. Some teachers are offering online meetings. Please contact your student's teachers if in-person is not an option.
Also, we will be celebrating Unity Week Feb. 10-13. Students will be offered different ways to recognize the value that diversity plays in our society and how we can be more respectful of each other. Please ask them about these activities.
Lastly, please continue to prioritize attendance! At the end of terms 3 and 4, we will have a drawing for Free Nike Kicks! To be eligible for the drawing, students must have 90% attendance for the term or better (excused absences will count as absences) OR have most improved attendance for the term - improving from 65% to 90%). We are hoping to continue to recognize the efforts of our students in prioritizing school and being in class.
* 90% attendance or better will be expected of our seniors to be able to walk at graduation. They need to clear their unexcused absences by attending before school or after school tutoring, lunch detention, or Friday school.
Thank you for all you do and we are lucky to have you as our ALA community! Good luck to our Fine Arts programs with their play Geeks and Gangster and our dance groups who will be competing out of state. We also wish our winter sports luck in upcoming play-off games! Go, Eagles!
