Greetings Edmond Fine Arts Educators and Administrators:

We have reached the Holiday/Winter Season! So many wonderful programs packed into such a small window of time before Winter break! I believe between December 2nd and December 17th, we have over 50 programs scheduled. Such a wonderful time for celebrations of JOY! As we make the final push toward the end of the semester, remember the importance of working together to increase the brightness of your light! Like a string of holiday lights, the strand is just not as bright without your contribution to the group! Thank you for your dedication, effort, collaboration and everything that you bring to your team!

The arts are ALIVE and WELL in Edmond Public Schools!

Clay dessert sculptures were a big hit with all of the young artists at Centennial Elementary! They used the inspiration of a famous American artist, Wayne Theibald. Thiebaud had childhood memories of working in diners and bakeries. He would often sketch the desserts on display. Students saw many examples of his dessert paintings before designing their own dessert. Each grade sculpted a different dessert. 5th graders created ice cream sundaes with model magic topped with a mixture of glue and tempera paint to make chocolate syrup. 4th graders made colorful cupcakes with a plastic sample cup as an armature. 3rd graders molded several mini donuts. 2nd graders crafted their favorite pies. 1st graders sculpted their own melting ice cream cones. Kindergarten made lollipops.

Several times throughout the project students proclaimed how much fun they had in art. Students proclaimed in joy, “This is the Best Day Ever!”, “I Love Clay!”, “When do we get to take these home!?” Can we do this again!” They were all very appreciative. Students grasp vocabulary words such as sculpture, armature, slab, coil, mixed media, form, spiral, twist and texture. Students were able to mix their own colors using the Model Magic Clay primary colors, which mixed beautifully making secondary colors or intermediate colors. Some students mixed the bright clay with white clay to create tints such as pink. Others added markers to make an even wider array of colors.
