Folsom School News
June 2024
Dear Folsom Families,
We are in the final days of the 2023-2024 school year! On behalf of the Folsom Staff, thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning and contributing to the successes at Folsom School. The Folsom staff and students did a tremendous job this year teaching and learning while creating a school environment where students learn through fun and engaging experiences. We wish you and your family an enjoyable summer and look forward to the start of next school year!
The Folsom staff will wave good-bye to students on June 17th and then quickly transition in the planning and preparing for the summer learning program and the upcoming school year. We also want to make sure our families are prepared for August by providing resources that can be found on the school website. The class supply list for the upcoming school year can be accessed under the Parents tab. Secondly, you will also find the 2024-2025 school year calendar under the same tab.
Once again, thank you for a wonderful school year and we wish everyone an enjoyable summer!
Mr. Kevin Fricke, Superintendent
Folsom School District
Field Day
Dear Folsom Family,
Folsom’s Field Day will be held on Thursday, June 13th, starting at 9:00 am. Parents are invited to attend this year’s field day, however, only students will be participating in the activities (Parents can watch and cheer on their child’s class throughout the day). The final activity of the day will be the Collings Lakes Fire Department cooling off the students with their spray tanker! In addition to the activities, students will be treated to a BBQ lunch prior to dismissal. Students will eat lunch picnic style outdoors. Parents are able to purchase the BBQ lunch for themselves for $5 per person. Parents attending the event need to sign-in at the entrance table located near the PK playground. If you are also signing your student out this will be done at the entrance table. Lunch bracelets can be purchased at that time as well. Parents will not be permitted in the building during Field Day.
In order to maintain some organization, we are asking parents who will be taking their student home on Field Day to please fill out the Google Form (please fill out one form per student) below:
https://forms.gle/Ade9gS4PMSaaMxNy7
Here are some reminders in preparing your student for Field Day:
-Dress your student in proper clothing suitable for the temperature.
-Please apply sunblock before students arrive to school.
-Students will receive field day shirt the morning of field day.
-No Jewelry or dresses.
-Shorts are permitted but must meet dress code standards.
-Hats, sun block, sun glasses, etc. should be labeled with your student’s name.
-Sneakers and socks are required - NO flip flops.
-Water will be available on field and at the nurse’s station. We ask that students do not bring soda, energy drinks, or high sugar fluids to the event as they dehydrate the body.
-Sling bags can be carried by students the day of the event.
-Students should bring a towel to dry off with as well as use to sit on for picnic lunch.
We look forward to having a great day with all of our students!
Sincerely,
Kevin Fricke
Superintendent
Summer Learning
Another school year is ending and the long days of summer lie ahead. Even though leisure time activities start to take precedence over academic endeavors, I would like to encourage you to keep reading high on your child’s list of summer activities. It really is true that readers are leaders. Just like other skills your children are learning, such as how to hit a baseball or play the piano, reading needs to be practiced every day to maintain and strengthen skills. There is an extensive body of research that tells us that academic achievement is directly related to how much time children spend reading outside of school.
Math activities will also be provided by each classroom teacher. The purpose of the summer math practice is to provide students an opportunity to stay engaged in mathematics over the summer and reinforce the necessary skills for the upcoming school year. The summer math packets and Think Stretch books will be collected the first week of school.
Kindergarten and 1st Grade
Folsom school will be providing students in Kindergarten and First grade a Think Stretch book before summer break. Think Stretch effectively combats the key issues in summer learning loss with ready-to-use learning materials that provide clear direction for parents. In addition to the book, the Think Stretch website offers additional activities for children and families to explore: https://thinkstretch.com/activities/.
2nd and 3rd Grade
This summer students in second and third grade will be reading Nasty, Stinky, Sneakers by Eve Bunting. Each classroom will review and begin reading the book prior to summer break. More information will be sent home from the classroom teachers.
Middle School
Our middle school students in grades 4th and 5th will read The Distance to Home by Jenn Bishop
and our students in 6th and 7th grade The Crossover by Kwame Alexander. These books both deal with sibling relationships and have a sports element.
Students will attend a kick-off assembly where they will discuss the expectations, which include reading the book prior to the start of school, taking notes, and taking a quiz the first week we return in September. Students will join the Summer Reading Google Classroom, which will be a place they can turn to for support. Books will be provided for students.
