Back to School - August 2024
Dear Moses Lake School District Families and Patrons,
I want to begin by acknowledging the financial situation our school district faces is not the fault of students, staff, school administrators, or the community. Many district level systems failed, and the terrible fallout of that failure necessitates a reduction in Moses Lake School District’s educational programs. We have known this since May, but the reality is hitting home for many right now. Please know the measures being taken today are for the purpose of gaining financial traction so offerings for students can be expanded in the future.
Next week we will begin to rebuild our system and our commitment to providing the best possible education for our students remains unwavering. On the first days of school, some things may look different, but our caring staff will still welcome the hopeful faces of Moses Lake’s young people onto our buses and into our schools, and everyone will be reminded that the students are the reason we exist as a public school system.
As we navigate the coming year together, I want to emphasize the importance of community, resilience and collaboration. Together, we will work to create a brighter future for our district and most importantly, our students.

Child Nutrition Eligibility & Education Benefit Application
We are pleased to announce that the Moses Lake School District will be participating in the federal program Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) available to select schools as a part of the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Through CEP, all students receive a nutritious breakfast and lunch at no cost, regardless of family income.
How is the district eligible for CEP? The information you provide by returning the forms below impacts the funding that each school receives from the state government and captures information to ensure the district receives all of the funding it is entitled to for state educational programs. If we do not meet qualifications, we may no longer qualify for all students to receive free meals in the future.
What do I need to do? Please complete the Child Nutrition Eligibility & Education Benefit Application and Consent to Share form and return it to your school or the Food Services Department (1338 W. Ivy Ave – Building D, Moses Lake, WA 98837 | 509-793-7998). Prequalified families may have already received these forms.
Security
The Moses Lake School District has announced that families should expect an increased law enforcement presence during the first few weeks of school. This includes officers from the Moses Lake Police Department (MLPD), State Patrol, and the Grant County Sheriff's Office. This is a routine measure each year to help manage new traffic patterns as students return to school. We welcome their presence as this helps to ensure a safe start to the new school year.
Additionally, the district has emphasized that security within schools remains a top priority. There have been no reductions in the classified security staff nor the School Resource Officers (SROs), who are dedicated to maintaining the safety and security of both staff and students. The district currently has three School Resource Officers (SROs), who are MLPD officers assigned to work in the schools. A fourth SRO will be added once hiring and training are completed, ensuring that there is no reduction in SRO support.
This commitment to maintaining strong security measures is in line with community feedback, which highlighted the importance of not reducing security resources. The Moses Lake School District values its partnership with the MLPD and is dedicated to continuing this collaborative effort to keep schools safe.
