PSAT 8.9 Update
Thank you for your student's participation in the PSAT 8.9 last month. In December, VHHS will share how to electronically access and interpret your student’s PSAT 8.9 scores and learn about how D128 uses these scores to assist in course placement for 9th grade courses. On January 18, 2024, VHHS will host an orientation event during which current 8th grade families will learn about the overall course selection process for the 2024-2025 school year. Specific details about 8th grade orientation will be shared in a future newsletter and also mailed to your student's address.
If you have any questions about the course selection process or the orientation events, please contact our Assistant Principal Dr. Andrew Young at 847-932-2000 / andrew.young@d128.org or v.registration@d128.org. If you have questions specific to the PSAT 8.9 itself, please reach out to Director of Data and Assessment Ms. Charlotte Eames at 847-247-4517 / charlotte.eames@d128.org.
ILLINOIS ACCELERATED PLACEMENT LAW GOES INTO EFFECT
In the 2023-24 school year, the Accelerated Placement Act will go into effect. This act requires Illinois public school districts to automatically enroll students who meet or exceed state standards in English Language Arts (ELA), Math, or Science in the next most rigorous level of coursework in that content area the following school year. For instance, a student who is taking Algebra I as a 9th-grader and who meets or exceeds state standards in Math will be automatically enrolled in Honors Geometry for their 10th-grade year. To read more about the Accelerated Placement Act, click on this link. The requirements of this act also apply to incoming 9th-graders. Therefore, the data we receive from the PSAT 8.9 has become even more important in our placement process for incoming 9th-graders.
Students who score within the ranges shown above will be eligible for Accelerated Placement and automatically enrolled in the next most rigorous course in the corresponding content area. To determine placement in Science, both the ELA and Math scores will be taken into account.
All 8th-grade through 11th-grade students who meet benchmarks will be automatically enrolled in the next most rigorous course; however, this does not mean that students who do not meet benchmarks cannot also be enrolled in the next most rigorous course. D128 will also provide parents with the option to enroll their student in coursework that they believe better aligns with their student's postsecondary education or career goals.

2024-2025 Counselor Course Selection Support & Additional Information:
As all prior years, school counselors will be available to help answer questions pertaining to your individual student regarding course registration, elective options, and impact of accelerated placement during course registration season (January & February). Counselors will continue to help your student make course decisions and balance their schedule with your student's personal interests/passions, post-secondary goals, and wellbeing in mind.
Several more details will be shared during the course registration process to support families and your individual student. As a result of this new law, new school processes are being developed at all area high schools and we will continue to provide information to all VHHS families as it becomes available. We look forward to supporting your student as they prepare for their post-secondary endeavors.
