News
This will be the last weekly newsletter until we gear up for the first day of school. We will start sending out Back to School information in July! We hope you have an excellent Summer Break!
Dear Families,
Last week was a busy week for ChurchillCSD staff, students, and families. Everywhere I went I saw staff, students, and parents anxiously engaged in the work of learning. Learning is something enhanced by a community, and all that has gone on this past week caused me to smile inside with the realization of how strong our community is.
I spent some time reflecting upon this past year. For me, this was a year of firsts. It was my first year as your superintendent and through that, I spent time learning things I had never learned before. There were many firsts. I liken that to what our students and their families will soon be facing. As this school year ends on Friday, our students, families, and staff will prepare for a new set of firsts to happen during the next school year. A first day in class with a new teacher, a first day in a class you’ve never taken before, possibly the first time at a new school, and a whole slew of first opportunities for those graduating seniors who are moving forward into the next stage of their life. One of the things I love about education is this excitement that happens every year as one year is ushered out and exciting plans are implemented for the next year.
This will be the last newsletter of the 23-24 school year, but keep on the lookout throughout the break for updates on the things happening during the summer (including pictures and information about the events of the last week of school). Staff will be hard at work preparing for the next school year and we will send out highlights to keep you informed of what is happening across the School District. In addition to deep cleaning and some painting, we will be doing some other projects, including turfing of the football field at CCHS and some other upgrades at some of our campuses.
When I think of what to say to everyone at this point in the year, I keep returning to the same thing – THANK YOU!
First, thank you to the students. Everything we do is to support and teach you the skills necessary in life. Your efforts in school are amazing and I challenge you to keep it going!
Second, thank you to the families, guardians, and community members who support our students and their learning. The schools alone cannot teach our children everything they need to know. Working together in a partnership with you, I am confident we can teach them the skills they need to know in preparation for the next phase of their journey when they finish school.
Third, thank you to the rest of our community that partners with our schools and district to provide a huge variety of experiences to our children. This includes the City of Fallon, Churchill County, NAS Fallon, Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe, numerous private businesses and individuals, and other community agencies. The strength and dedication to the students in our community is amazing!
Fourth, thank you to the staff of ChurchillCSD. Each and every school day (and other days) hundreds of staff members join together to teach and protect the children enrolled in ChurchillCSD. They are a wonderful group of people and I am very fortunate for the opportunity to work with them.
I consider it a great privilege to serve as your superintendent and I look forward to continuing our journey together. Be safe this week, finish strong, and then enjoy your well-deserved summer break!

📝 Message from Assistant Superintendent Stacey Cooper
It's hard to believe the school year is coming to a close. The past few weeks have truly been enjoyable, exciting, and bittersweet. Just this week alone, I had the opportunity to watch the send-off of the CCHS athletes as they took on the state playoffs. Lahontan Elementary joined the assembly, with our future athletes donning spirit fliers and smiles of excitement! To see our youngest little ones joining in with the high schoolers to celebrate and cheer on our students was absolutely the best!
As I write this blurb to the close of the school year, I sit behind the CCHS home plate, cheering our kids, embracing the community, and taking in the sunshine. May we all take time to embrace the sunshine, enjoy one another, and do some self-care over the summer break.

NO Transportation Blackout THIS WEEK! 🎉🚌
ChurchillCSD Families,
I would like to inform you of some exciting news. The ChurchillCSD Transportation Department has announced that there will be NO blackout on the last week of school. All buses and routes will run the week of May 20-24.
I would like to express my gratitude to our transportation department staff for their hard work and dedication. They stepped up during these hard times and I cannot express how grateful I am to all of them. Their efforts to hire and train more drivers and improve district transportation services have paid off. At this point in time, it looks like we will start the next school year fully staffed with bus drivers.
I want to thank you for your understanding and support during the blackout schedules. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we continuously work to improve our transportation service for our students and families.
Best Regards,
Derild Parsons
Superintendent
🚌 Transportation Registration for the 24-25 School Year
Now Accepting Applications!
ChurchillCSD Families,
As the 23-24 school year ends, ChurchillCSD is excited to announce we are now accepting transportation applications for the 24-25 school year.
Any ChurchillCSD family intending to use district transportation for the 24-25 school year must fill out an application at: bit.ly/CCSD24-25RequestForm
The district will follow current Regulation 5144.1 for all transportation decisions, which includes busing for all COUNTY K-12 students. Students in grades K-8 who live within City limits, and are more than ½ mile from their school, can use bus stops at pre-selected sites.
We also highly encourage all of our families to download the StopFinder app. This app will provide real-time information to parents and school transportation departments. Your child’s safety is paramount. And knowledge – and information – is power. We know that having the most current information is critical. We also all know that schedules and plans change for any number of reasons. But receiving timely updates is crucial for you - which is why we are thrilled to offer Stopfinder to our families again this year.
If you have any questions regarding the transportation application for the 24-25 school year or the Stopfinder app, please email stopfinder@churchillcsd.com.

REQUIRED VACCINES BEFORE ENTERING 12TH GRADE & 7TH GRADE
Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) REQUIRED BEFORE 12th Grade!
In 2020 Nevada Legislature passed a law that requires students who will be an incoming senior, to have the meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) BEFORE they can start school in the fall. This means that every single current 11th grader has to have this vaccine before they can start 12th grade. This does not apply to any other grade.
Parents can get this vaccine (MCV4) at their doctor's office, pharmacy, or if you don't have insurance or if you have Medicaid, you can get the vaccine from The Central Nevada Health District - call 775-867-8181 for an appointment.
Once your child receives the vaccine, please notify CCHS school nurse Adonna Crowley at crowleya@churchillcsd.com or call her at 775-423-2181 ext. 4124 with the date the vaccine was given. For more information please contact Adonna, or Chief Health Nurse Chassity Mills at 775-423-3463 x 2003.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR 6th GRADE FAMILIES
Dear Parents/Guardians of 6th graders,
All 6th graders must receive the MCV4 (meningococcal) immunization and the Tdap immunization before the start of 7th grade on 12 August 2024. Children will not be allowed to begin 7th grade until there is proof of the immunization being completed.
Parents are encouraged to review their child's shot record and make arrangements with their health care provider for vaccination prior to the busy 'Back to School' season.
Because of the volume of students requiring immunization appointments, you may find it difficult to get an appointment for immunizations over the summer. For those who are uninsured, underinsured, on Medicaid or American Indian/Alaskan Native, you can make an appointment with the Central Nevada Health District community health nurse at (775) 867-8181. You can also get these vaccines from a local pharmacy – just make sure they take your insurance and that they administer the correct vaccines. Listen for announcements about vaccine clinics and ‘back to school’ vaccine clinics.

CCHS
Steve Johnson’s class, Honors Biochem students Manny Karaway and Even Giovanetti genetically engineered E. coli bacteria. They inserted DNA from a glow-in-the-dark jellyfish (green) and synthetic DNA created in a test tube (blue). The outcome of their work was fascinating. The bacteria now glows both blue and green in the dark.

In Kristina Lee's class, the students dove into the history of the United States, starting from the era of the first Native Americans and progressing through to the culmination of the American Revolution. To bring history to life, the students crafted a 3D timeline of significant events and ingeniously programmed a "time machine" robot to travel a narrated path through the events of history.

On April 15, Melissa Humphrey, Kailey Hughes, and Marla Woods' classes put 12 chicken eggs in an incubator. They have been learning about the life cycles of plants and animals for their science standards. Each day, for 21 days they would talk about what the chick embryo would look like and then add a colored picture to their chick timelines. On Monday, May 6 (day 21), the students walked into the classroom to three hatched chicks. Then later that afternoon they actually got to watch one of the chicks hatch.
Lahontan
Theresa Moon and Shannon WindRiver’s Kindergarten Kindness Squad delivered gratitude cards and cute personalized totes to some of Lahontans amazing staff members last week. The students really wanted to thank the special people who supported them throughout the week and helped make their school experience so much fun. They brainstormed with Moon and Windriver and came up with this idea to show them that they are so very grateful to each of them. Lahontan is lucky to have such incredible staff members,
Northside Early Learning Center
Last week, 3-year-old students in Laura Lee's class engaged in water play. This engaging experience facilitated joint play and cooperation, nurturing important social skills in the young learners.
