Tomorrow's Leaders
Leadership and realizing one’s individual potential were the themes of the week here at HMS!
This past Wednesday the HMS eighth grade class met with Ed Gerety and heard his powerful message of living a life of kindness, leadership and gratitude. As Mr. Gerety told our students, "If you don’t choose your greatness, someone else will choose your mediocrity.”
If you’re interested in hearing more from Ed, you can check out his podcast: Parents Navigating the Teen Years - An authentic conversation about the toughest issues facing teenagers today and what we can do as parents to help them navigate these challenging waters. Featuring award-winning educators, authors, and special guests that provide expert advice, real solutions, and inspiration so together we can help our teens succeed in school and in life.

Thanks to the HEF for funding this very powerful and engaging assembly!
HMS Making a Difference
The Ambassador Club and Green Team have teamed up for the month of March to help reduce waste and raise money for the New England Wildlife Center. We are collecting returnable bottles and cans and will donate the proceeds from the returns to the Wildlife Center.
If you want to drop off any returnables please bring your bottles/cans rinsed out and in a bag to Mrs. Cassidy's room (307). Please make sure the bottles/cans are returnable in Massachusetts.
The Science of Caring
The caring and dedicated educators at HMS know that school is more than the lessons in the classroom and that our students can often need someone to talk to. In that spirit, grade eight science teacher, Mrs. Flaherty invites students to let her know more about themselves through her “Talk to Me Tuesdays”
Every other Tuesday or so, Mrs. Flaherty leaves a slip of paper out for the students to grab as they enter. It reads:
Tell me, Talk to me Tuesday…..
Need to let me know something without talking directly to me?
Do you need something, anything I can help with?
Want me to know something about you or what’s going on in class, the halls, or at home?
Want to tell me how to do something better/different, or what you liked or hated so far?
Write it below, or write nothing. We all will pass in a paper. Then fold it and put it in the box. No name needed unless you want me to know it’s from you.
Over the years she has learned much about the kids she gets to work with; their anxieties, good or bad grades, happy things, accomplishments (the play, winning a piano competition, cool vacations). It's just one more way for our students to connect with the adults in our school, and know that they have someone listening to them, no matter what it is.
We are lucky to have teachers like Mrs. Flaherty, who know what it means to teach “the whole child”!
Project 351 - Cradles to Crayons Clothing Drive
A message from our Project 351 Ambassador, Lexi Grimm
Hingham Middle School and the Ambassadors Club have an awesome opportunity to help children in need in our state! In coordination with Project 351, a leadership group for 8th graders across Massachusetts, HMS will hold a clothing drive for the Cradles to Crayons organization from Monday, March 25, through Monday, April 1. Cradles to Crayons is a non-profit organization committed to helping children with clothing insecurity.
About 1 in every 3 kids in Massachusetts will experience clothing insecurity at some point in their lives. Let’s join together to help reduce that number and get clothing to children in need in our community and surrounding areas.
Have an old t-shirt lying around in your drawer that you never wear?
Donate it!
Found a sweatshirt in your closet that is too small for you now?
Donate it!
Donations can be dropped off outside the main office in the bins labeled “Crayons To Crayons Drive.” Please donate new and like-new clothes and double-check for holes, stains, or rips to make sure that every item is wearable.
Take some time to look through your closet and see what you can donate—every item counts! Thank you so much for your participation!

DCF EMERGENCY BAGS
Who are we…Cadette Girl Scout Troop #67831 from Hingham
What we are doing … We are collecting basic needs to create emergency bags for DCF kids.
Please help!
Did you know? 25 Investigates obtained a new report that reveals dozens of state agency-involved children are getting stuck in hospitals, not because they are sick but because they have no place to go. In 2022, there were 9 children under the age of 18 stuck in local hospitals and/or medical facilities, because there was no place for them to go. Many of them without basic needs.
Our emergency bags will be delivered to these kids. Other bags will be given to local police stations, social workers, and fire stations for the children that are taken from their home in an emergency and cannot return back home.
Fact: Of the 8176 children in the care of the Department of Children and Families, 5,083, or 62% are classified as in “continuous placement,” according to March 2022 Department of Children and Families (DCF) data obtained by 25 Investigates. This means kids could be taken out of their home on an emergency basis over and over again and they would need these bags before they were placed into a foster home.
