Principal's Message
Dear Angell Community,
Happy Sunday! I have a special message from our district music staff for our 4th grade families regarding the fine arts options for 5th grade and how the process will work this year.
Congratulations! You and your soon-to-be fifth grader are about to embark on a fantastic journey filled with unique experiences. One of the most exciting decisions ahead is choosing which musical ensemble (band, choir, or orchestra) they'll join for the upcoming school year. This decision isn't just about fifth grade—it will hopefully mark the beginning of a lifelong love for music.
Whether your child decides to be part of the band, orchestra, or choir, it is important to note that they commit to that group for the entire year. While the excitement of trying something new may wear off, or coming up against challenges may make us rethink our decision, committing to a group and learning that we can get better at hard things if we stick with them are valuable things that participating in a musical ensemble for an entire year can teach us.
If your child would like to join band or orchestra, the next step is choosing an instrument. We have developed a process to help your student find an instrument that they will be successful with. Your child’s general music teacher will be talking about band and orchestra instruments in their general music class. In addition, students will get a visit from some of our high school band, orchestra, and choir students on May 2 so they can experience firsthand what being part of the Berkley Schools Music Program looks and sounds like.
After the presentation, you and your child will have about a week to choose three instruments that they are interested in trying. To ensure that every student has an opportunity to try instruments, we've scheduled a special school day for fourth graders, where all students will get to try their three favorite instruments with guidance from music professionals. Each school will have a 90 minute slot on either May 12 or 13. *Angell will host a session on Tuesday, May 13th in the afternoon.
After trying out their three instruments, your child will proceed to check out with one of our music staff. We will discuss the experience with each student and help them choose an instrument and music ensemble that they can be successful with. After all fittings have been completed at each elementary school, you will receive notification of what music option your child will participate in.
Don’t forget to fill out this music instrument survey by May 9, so we are prepared for your child’s special instrument day!
We look forward to working with our new students in 5th grade,
Berkley Schools Music Staff
- Carole Hoste - Norup 5th grade band
- Keri Pruse - 5th grade band

- Ben Moy - Norup 5th grade orchestra
- Sarah Noble - Norup 5th grade choir
- Tai Kimmerly - 5th grade choir

Angell PTA Restaurant Night
Angells Around the World
Our PTA is hosting a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) night on Wednesday, April 16th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm for all Angell families. We hope you can make the event. Our PTA has also started the work needed to host our annual Angells Around the World Event on May 8th. Here is some important information from the PTA if you would like to participate or attend the event.
Event: 2nd Annual DEI Celebration
Date: May 8th, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Location: Blacktop by the Playground
Join us for our 2nd Annual DEI Celebration, a fun, relaxed event where we celebrate and learn about the many diverse cultures around us! This event is a great opportunity for families to share their cultural heritage in a simple, enjoyable way.
How it Works:
Sign Up: Families will sign up to represent a country or culture. You’ll create a fun and simple poster or display with information about that culture—such as traditional foods, important landmarks, or interesting facts. You can use the google form that’s attached to sign up.
Optional Creative Touches: Feel free to add your own creative touches to your table, such as playing music, offering a small cultural activity (like coloring), or bringing a dish or snack that represents your culture. All these extras are optional, so keep it as easy and fun as you like!
Table Setup: Each family will be provided with a table to set up their display. You can decorate it in whatever way helps share your culture.
Special Note for Families with Concerts: We understand that Kindergarten and 1st-grade students have their concerts that evening at 6:00 PM and 6:45 PM. We hope this will help boost attendance by allowing families to attend the concert first and then swing by the DEI event afterward!
If you have any concerns or need to leave your table during the event (due to your child’s performance), please don’t hesitate to sign up! You’re welcome to step away from your table at any time.
We look forward to seeing everyone there and celebrating our diverse cultures!
Please reach out to Nicole Feys if you have any questions. Nicolefeys4@gmail.com
Spirit Wear
When to Exclude a Child from School
Many illnesses do not require exclusion. However, children may be excluded if the illness prevents the child from participating comfortably in school activities or if there is risk of spread of harmful disease to others. Criteria include:
1. Severely ill: A child that is lethargic or less responsive, has difficulty breathing, or has a rapidly spreading rash.
2. Fever: A child with a temperature of 100.4°F or greater AND behavior changes or other signs or symptoms (e.g., sore throat, rash, vomiting, or diarrhea). The child should not return until 24 hours of no fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications.
3. Diarrhea: A child has two loose or watery stools. The child should have no loose stools for 24 hours prior to returning to school. Exception: A healthcare provider has determined it is not infectious. Diarrhea may be caused by antibiotics or new foods a child has eaten.
4. Vomiting: A child that has vomited two or more times. The child should have no vomiting episodes for 24 hours prior to returning.
5. Abdominal pain: A child with abdominal pain that continues for more than two hours or intermittent pain associated with fever or other symptoms.
6. Rash: The child with a rash AND has a fever or a change in behavior. Exclude until the rash subsides or until a healthcare provider has determined it is not infectious.
7. Skin sores: A child with draining sores on an exposed area that cannot be covered with waterproof dressing.
8. Certain communicable diseases: Students and staff diagnosed with certain communicable diseases (e.g strep throat, norovirus, influenza, hand foot mouth, pinkeye, etc. ) may have to be excluded for a certain period of time. Please call the office and report if your child has been diagnosed with a communicable disease.
9. Covid- We are still no longer contract tracing for covid and do not need to quarantine for 5 days. Everyone is able to return when they are "well," meaning fever free for 24 hours, without fever reducing medications. It is left up to the individual when they feel well. Also, masks are optional and not required per Oakland County Health Department.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Nurse Rose or the school office.
Important Safety Reminders
- ROLLING THROUGH THE STOP SIGN NEAR CROSSING GUARDS: I have noticed that several drivers are not coming to a COMPLETE STOP at our designated crossing areas. This is not only unsafe but illegal. Please slow down, come to a complete stop and wait for our crossing guard to completely clear the traffic area before moving forward.
- PARKING AND DROPPING OFF IN THE STAFF PARKING LOT: The staff parking lot located near the south end of the school between the school and the tennis courts is reserved for staff only. We have one family (due to a temporary medical issue) that has permission to use the lot for drop off and pick up. Without specific permission absolutely no other community members should enter the staff parking lot with their vehicle. For many this may seem convenient but for our students and staff this creates a very serious safety and access issue. I am directing anyone who is currently using our parking lot to wait for students or to get closer to drop off points to stop this practice immediately. If you have relatives helping with drop-off and pick-up please make sure you pass this information along.
Please be advised that I will work with public safety to encourage tickets for anyone who continues to create these safety issues. Your cooperation is both appreciated and expected moving forward.
