News
Dear ChurchillCSD Families & Staff,
On this Veterans Day, I would like to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to the brave men and women who have served in our nation's armed forces. Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting our freedom are the foundation of the values we hold dear. To all our veterans, thank you for your service and for the sacrifices you have made for our country.
As I reflect on the significance of this day, I also want to recognize that there are only 8 school days left until Thanksgiving break. Itβs hard to believe how quickly this semester has flown by. As we approach the holiday, I commend our students and staff for their hard work and perseverance.
In the next couple of weeks, our students will continue to power through their lessons, projects, and activities. Letβs encourage them to finish strong, and remind them that their well-deserved break is just around the corner. This is a great opportunity to stay focused so our students can return in December and finish the fall semester on a high note.
Thank you for your continued support and Happy Veterans Day!
Warm Regards,
Derild Parsons

Message from our Partners at Care Solace π
Veterans Day, celebrated on November 11th, is our opportunity to honor those who have served and the families who have supported them. For generations, the brave members of the U.S. military have defended our nation, embodying values greater than themselves. Today, we reflect on their sacrifices and celebrate the impact theyβve had on our country.
Veterans and their families face unique challenges during active service. They may endure long separations, frequent relocations, or experience anxiety while their loved ones are in harmβs way. Transitioning to civilian life can be tough, and those affected by trauma might need professional support to heal. As a school community, we must stand by our veterans and their families.
Here are three ways to show your support:
- Be a listening ear for veterans and their families. Offer them a space to share their thoughts and feelings.
- Provide the Veterans Crisis Line information for those in need. Available 24/7 by dialing 988 and pressing 1.
- Connect them to Care Solace through your district's personalized link for ongoing support. If you or a family member would like to access mental health or substance use treatment:
- Call 888-515-0595. Multilingual support is available 24/7/365.
- Visit www.caresolace.com/churchillcsd where you can search on your own or click βBook Appointmentβ for assistance.
To all our veterans, thank you for your service.

RESPIRATORY ILLNESS
With the beginning of a new school year, and the close contact we have with one another, brings respiratory illnesses; Influenza (Flu), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19.
Symptoms of all three are very similar, which makes it hard to distinguish between these illnesses. Therefore, if you think your child may have one of these respiratory illnesses, please get them tested by a healthcare provider so we can prevent the spread in our schools and community.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Students suspected of having a communicable disease may be temporarily excluded from school until an appropriate medical authority determines that the student is not a health or safety threat to other students or staff members. Written documentation may be required from a medical care provider if determined by the school nurse.
Students will be excluded for any of the following conditions:
Fever 100.4 degrees F or higher
Signs or symptoms of possible severe respiratory illnesses (Flu, COVID, RSV)
Diarrhea, defined as having more than 6 loose stools in a 24-hour period, or 3 in a 7 1/2 hour school day.
Vomiting
Mouth or nose sores (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Rash
Suspicious skin lesions (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Unusual color of skin, eyes, stool, or urine
Exclusion may also occur for the mildly ill child if the child is unable to participate in normal activities or if the child needs more care than can be provided by school health staff.

LICE
We are all excited to be back at school! As we encourage children to learn and share, they also share things we don't want them to: Head Lice! We start seeing a lot of lice outbreaks at our schools this time of year. Please click the link below to learn how to identify lice and for information on what you can do if lice hits your home.
Attendance Reminder for Families β
As we approach the "giving" season, we want to encourage our families to review the health information provided above from our Chief School Nurse. Additionally, we'd like to emphasize our attendance policies and procedures.
ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
EXCUSED does not equal EXEMPT! (State Law NRS 392.130)
Please note that any absence not excused by a medical/mental health professional or a school administrator will be counted against the student's attendance as per Nevada state attendance law.
Any absence that goes unreported by the parent will default to a truancy after three days.
Excused = NOT EXEMPT (counted against student's attendance).
Exempt = Medical Professional note provided or School Admin Excused (not counted against student attendance).
Notification: Schools may notify families of any concerning patterns associated with excessive absences; including but not limited to notes home, School Attendance Review Board (SARB) warnings, pre-SARB notices, and SARB attendance contracts.

Did you know that November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month?
In 2007, Congress officially designated November as National Homeless Youth Awareness Month (NHYAM) to raise awareness of youth homelessness, its causes, potential solutions, and the urgent need to prevent homelessness among children and teens. Since then, November has become a month to spotlight the challenges faced by homeless youth, honor the work of businesses, organizations, and volunteers supporting these young individuals, and strengthen national efforts to prevent and ultimately end youth homelessness across the United States.
π Migrant Education Program Newsletter
The Migrant Education Program (MEP) offers technical assistance and financial support to enhance educational opportunities and academic success for migrant children, youth, agricultural workers, fishers, and their families. Its primary goal is to ensure that migrant children receive the same free public education as other children. MEP funds, which are federal, support high-quality education programs for migratory children aged 3 to 21. These funds help prevent penalties due to disparities in curriculum, graduation requirements, or academic standards as children move between states or within a state. Additionally, MEP ensures that migratory children have full and fair opportunities to meet the same challenging state academic standards expected of all students.

πHighlight from Assistant Superintendent Stacey Cooperπ
The start of November kicks off our recognition and appreciation for the indigenous history of the region. I had the opportunity to join Numa Elementary with their assembly this week. Words truly cannot express the magnitude of appreciation I have for the local culture. The history and traditions permeate our community to the extent that our students and staff see this recognition as a part of their daily lives.
Not only is this time of year dedicated towards our regional cultural appreciation, but we also recognize our military veterans. CCMS and EC Best joined together to host a breakfast for our military families. This is just one symbol of our local appreciation for our veterans. Our veterans and active military give us pause to alleviate the freedoms we have. Thank you to our military for protecting our foundational beliefs!
All in all, so much to appreciate and be grateful.

U.S. Army Sgt. Garrett Archuleta, a proud CCHS graduate from the Class of 2015, spoke with Brooke Hill and Jeremy Sivers' combined senior Government and Economics classes last Monday. Sgt. Archuleta shared valuable insights about career opportunities in the Army, the importance of leadership, and the benefits of serving our country. His inspiring message highlighted how military service can shape one's future and foster skills that are invaluable in any path students choose. A huge thank you to Sgt. Archuleta for taking the time to connect with our students and for his service to our nation.

In honor of Nevada Day, biologists from the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), Kenny Pirkle and Kris Urquhart, visited Numa Elementary School to teach students about the stateβs wildlife. The students learned about animal adaptations, habitats, conservation, and tracking devices. They also enjoyed the chance to touch real pelts, hold antlers, and deepen their understanding of Nevadaβs diverse animals. The event highlighted the importance of wildlife conservation in Nevada, and students were reminded of their responsibility to preserve Nevadaβs natural beauty for future generations.

Lindsay Bacallo's first-grade class enjoyed a fun-filled lesson centered around pumpkins. Students began by inspecting various pumpkins and identifying their attributes. They then dissected the pumpkins to learn about their parts and created models. After reading "Little Boo," they had the chance to extract seeds from the pumpkins to plant at home and learned how to take care of their seeds and what their pumpkins were going to need to grow: sunlight, soil, water, and air. The class also learned the life cycle of a pumpkin and put their class pumpkin in a glass jar to observe it for the next few months as it decomposes, germinates, and a new plant starts to grow. To conclude their pumpkin-themed lesson, the students tasted pumpkin pie and graphed the results of who liked it and who did not. Overall, this lesson perfectly blended learning and fun, giving these students a deeper understanding of pumpkins and their life cycle.
