Longacre Weekly News
August 12, 2020
Dear Longacre Families,
The start of the school year is fast approaching and we understand that families are eager to know how school will look as we launch Learning at a Distance this fall. One new component that will shape how school will look is our use of a learning management system, Canvas. Canvas will replace Google Classroom as your student’s digital classroom. It will be a place for your student’s teacher to create and share learning plans with your student as well as provide feedback on your student’s progress. It will be the central hub of communication between the teacher, student, and parent/guardians. As a parent/guardian, you will be able to be an “observer” in the digital classroom seeing most of what a student sees.
Our instructional and technology departments have been working at an accelerated pace to ensure Canvas is available to staff, parents, and students for the start of the school year. The learning management system will be a learning curve for me, you, students, and teachers. The first few weeks of school will be a time for onboarding all of us to the new system. This learning will benefit us throughout this school year and in the coming years, so we will need to give ourselves this time to learn.
You will continue to receive information about Canvas throughout August and September, including how to access the parent dashboard and what you can see and do. Parents will have a single dashboard to access all of their FPS students. Parents, as observers to the classroom, can follow along via computer or from the Canvas Parent Apps that are downloaded from your devices' store (i.e. Google Store or the Apple App Store). Here is a glimpse into what the student dashboard looks like - Canvas Student Video as well as an LMS Informational Flyer.

Virtual Learning Pathway (VLP) update
As a result of the Board of Education approval of the Moving Forward Learning Plan, FPS will begin the year with Learning at a Distance. All K-5 students will enter Learning at a Distance and the Virtual Learning Path is suspended during this time. In the event there is a phase-in of in-person learning, families will be able to elect to stay remote through the Virtual Learning Path. Families do not need to make a decision at this time about whether they will enter the Virtual Learning Path at the start of the school year. We will continue to communicate to families regarding the timeline and choices related to the Virtual Learning Path.
