Union Middle Weekly Update V5.17!
December 15th, 2024
A Message From Mr. Feinberg
Hello UMS Families,
Well, we are down to the final week of the 2024 school year. I'll keep this newsletter short.
8th Grade Families - don't forget that we have the Leigh Principal joining our January 22nd Home and School Club meeting. We encourage our 8th grade families to attend this event as you'll receive first hand information on what to expect when your student begins high school in the fall. Our HSC meeting starts at 8:30-ish and the Leigh Principal's presentation begins at 9 am. Both events are held in the UMS library. Hope to see you there.
Also, 8th grade families, there is usually a Leigh High School Incoming 9th Grade Info Night in mid January. I'll be sharing a flyer this week or, at the latest, when we return with more additional information. Stay tuned.
In the middle-ish of January, Leigh counselors will be visiting our 8th grade ELA classrooms during the school day. The Leigh counselors will share what a day at Leigh looks like for our future Longhorns. Thereafter, families will receive, via email, a link to register their student for their classes and electives at Leigh. if you do not receive this email by the end of January, please contact Leigh directly for assistance.
(I'll detour for a moment here to share that it is not uncommon for 8th grade families to ask UMS about 9th grade Leigh questions. As indicated above, we do ask that you contact the Leigh counselors for all Leigh-related questions. You can also call Leigh directly if you need assistance with anything Leigh-related. They have the answers you seek and are the right people to speak with about all things Leigh.)
Finally, when we return in January, we will be preparing toward our 8th grade promotion in June, scheduled for 10 am @ Leigh High School on Friday, June 6th. This means our 8th grade families will receiving information about promotion gowns, Great America, and everything else related to the final semester of your student's time at Union Middle School. To say it's a mad dash for the last 90 days of school is an understatement. Get ready. :)
And I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday break. We return to UMS on January 6th. Be safe. Enjoy the break. See y'all soon.
All the best,
Todd

UMS Educator Profile - Wendy Johnson
This is Ms. Wendy Johnson's 1st year at Union Middle School. She currently serves as our Project Lead The Way teacher. Enjoy the following Q&A below as we get to meet Wendy!
How long have you been at UMS? What do you love about being an educator at UMS? I'm new to Union Middle School this year!
What are you most proud of in your career so far? Making connections with students and their families.
What is your favorite lesson/curriculum to teach each year? Why? Applied Chemistry in "Science of Technology" is my favorite. Students love all the hands-on projects, starting with making ice cream.
What made you want to become a teacher? I originally said I would never become a teacher solely because my mom said I was going to be. I ended up working a lot with kids during and after college: swim lessons, after school programs, tutoring, coaching. What really changed my mind was seeing the joy in kids' eyes when they learned something new, gained confidence, and could apply new knowledge.
If you had to describe your classroom in just a few words/sentences, what would you say? collaborative, hands-on, full of projects...organized chaos.
What is the most challenging topic/lesson to teach? Why? Circuitry is probably the most challenging because students understand the big ideas. They see it and use it every day. All of the smaller elements (diodes, transistors, capacitors) become the harder section for students to grasp.
Explain why your subject is important for your students to learn. How will they use this information in their future / "real world"? All of the PLTW classes use real-world concepts and situations for kids to understand the "when and why" of what they are learning. Projects push students to use the design process, knowing that it's okay to not get it the first time.
What are your words of wisdom? Listen and be honest!
What's one thing your students don't know about you that they would be surprised to find out? I did ballet for 6 years when I was a kid.
What's one instructional practice that you've adopted for your classroom that you now cannot live without? Having a balance of when a sample/example is given and when students experience productive struggle
What’s one thing on your bucket list? Front row seats at a Warriors game...
