Hello, Wonderful Oak Hill Community! What a wild weather week we've just had - that was a lot of ice! I hope you are all safe and warm as we wrap up the weekend and head into warmer weather this week.

Speaking of missing school, you may be wondering about possible make-up days for the four we missed last week. At this time, I do not have definitive information about make-up days for the ice storm and will share more as soon as I have any updates.

This week is Counselor Appreciation Week. We are so happy to have Ms.Rosales and Ms. Weber here to support our students, parents, and staff. 💚

African American Heritage Celebration - 40th Anniversary

Theme: “Building the Future from the Lessons of the Past

February 24, 2023 | 6:30 p.m.

Austin ISD Performing Arts Center

Join the 40th annual African American Heritage Celebration honoring over 130 students, as well as community and staff members who made a contribution to Austin ISD. Each year the African American Heritage Committee selects a high school to showcase the talent on their campus and host the program. Please attend this event to celebrate culture, heritage and history and honor our African American students.

Due to technical difficulties, the online registration for the 22-23 school year and the 23-24 school year will now open concurrently starting January 16th. Out of district families will also be able to register online.

The week of January 23rd is Holocaust Remembrance Week. In 2019, SB 1828 was passed in acknowledgment of the Holocaust’s ongoing significance. This bill calls for each district to determine age-appropriate instruction for students on the Holocaust.

Oak Hill will observe Holocaust Remembrance Week in the following ways:

• Students in grades K-5 will engage in a read aloud of the book Hold on to Your Music by Mona Golabek.
• This text is the children's version of The Children of Willesden Lane by the same author, and an approved reading listed on the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission's website.
• Students in 5th grade will engage in a book study of Hold on to Your Music.
• Students in grades K-5 will watch Mona Golabek in concert as part of the Willesden READS project.

The Willesden READS project is part of a national effort led by the Anti-Defamation League, the USC Shoah Foundation, and Discovery Education the week of January 25. Parents are invited to watch the concert via live stream if you would like to preview or view. You must register for the concert to receive a link. Salute is AISD’s annual celebration to recognize some of the district’s outstanding team members for their continued dedication to student excellence and achievement in our schools.

District staff, families, and the community are invited to submit a nomination for a staff member they believe represents the very best of AISD. This year's Salute Awards ceremony will recognize the winners in five categories, along with honoring Teachers of Promise and Teachers of the Year.

Nominations will close February 3rd at 5pm.

As we prepare for the FY2024 Budget year, please join us in conversations about Austin ISD’s 2023-24 budget. There will be several occurrences between January and May to attend. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the district's priorities, plans for staffing and programming, and how you can get involved in the budgeting process with your campus.

• Due to space, participation is limited to the first 50 parents to sign up.
• Parents need to sign up HERE by noon the Thursday before.
• Once the form reaches 50 people, it will no longer accept responses.
• The next 3 Fridays are listed for now and we will add additional dates for the spring semester.
• Parents must enter the building through the front door only AT ALL TIMES.
• We ask that each parent that is attending sign up and assembly is limited to PARENTS only at this time.
• Please make sure you are able to attend if you sign up so as not to take that spot from someone else.
• Parents can only stand in the back of the assembly due to space concerns. Please do not sit in the line with your child.
• Please model appropriate assembly conduct for students by not having side conversations.

If you are able to sign up, the office will pre-print a badge for you and you can pick it up on the front porch beginning at 7:20. If you have not been on campus this year, you will need to check in at the main office with your ID before assembly to get your badge.

We will continue to add dates to this form, so you can use the same link (above) to sign up for future dates. Thank you for following the rules of the campus to make sure things run smoothly and everyone stays safe. We appreciate you!

If your child needs to leave early for an appointment, please notify your child's teacher and the front office. When you arrive at the school, you can come to the front door or call from your car and then we will call for your student. We will not call for students until you are here. With our new schedules (and a new phone number system) please leave PLENTY of time (at least 10 minutes) from the time you call us to the time your child is ready to leave. If you have an appointment right after school, it is best to pick up your student no later than 2:45 to avoid the dismissal crunch. **If you have not had your driver's license scanned into our Raptor System in the last year, we will ask you to bring in your driver's license to the office***

Please remember to bring your ID with you EVERY time you visit campus. It is a requirement that we scan in your ID each time you come onto the campus. We appreciate you helping us to follow the procedures and keep our students safe!

Hi 5th grade families!

According to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, Integrity means acting in a way you know to be right and kind in all situations. This month, we are going to focus on having more integrity in our school. We would appreciate your help in discussing this at home. Simply choose kindness all the time - even if no one will notice, even if you're tired, even if you feel like it's someone else's turn. You will always feel better if you choose to do what is right and kind in all situations.
Here are some ideas to get you thinking about how you can show more integrity:
Clean up your work or play areas without being asked.
Help others who are struggling, even if an adult isn't there to see you do it.
Always tell the truth.
Complete all your chores or work before doing something else that you'd rather do.
Use manners.
Apologize if your words or actions hurt someone, without being reminded.
Follow the rules, even if an adult isn't there to see you do it.
If you make a mistake, ask for help.

The PTA is looking for volunteers to serve on the PTA Nominating Committee for the 2023/2024 school year.

The nominating committee....
-Will nominate candidates for next year's PTA officers (President-Elect, VP of Enrichment and Secretary). The actual election of officers will take place April 5, 2023.
-Is comprised of 5 members and 1 alternate member
-Individuals serving on the committee should have good judgement about people and have some ideas on where to find good candidates for next year's officers
-Committee members are encouraged to seek out diverse individuals to serve on the board who are NEW and or Seasoned OHE Parents.
-This is YOUR opportunity to BE THE CHANGE!! :) This is YOUR PTA and we want a diversity of opinions in our elected officers.

The volunteers for the committee will be formally elected at the PTA General Meeting on February 15, 2023. This is only to elect the NOMINATING committee members, not to elect actual PTA officers! :) (That will happen in April.)

Don’t take a holiday from exercise. Be the role model your kids need. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week and try to stay active during the holidays.

Physical activities your entire family can enjoy include:

• Walking

• Biking

• Jogging or running

• Skating

• Even housework!

• Remember to be a CATCH MVP family—Move & Stay Active, Value healthy eating, and Practice healthy habits. Make physical activity a family affair this holiday season!

Masks:

With the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, students, staff and visitors are not required to wear face masks when on school properties, unless they have tested positive for COVID-19. Note: Per CDC guidance, individuals with a positive COVID-19 result will be required to wear a mask for five days after returning from quarantine/isolation.

• Masks are not required, but are encouraged at any time of the school day or in any school space.
• Masks are optional at all times.Face masks will continue to be provided for any student, staff, or visitor upon request.

• All students, staff, and visitors will be allowed to make their own choice.
  

Close Contact and Contact Tracing

• Campus administrators will notify all families of positive cases on the campus using a standard notification letter. Individual classroom letters will not be sent home.

• With masking now being optional, all students and staff at the campus may be considered close contacts when there is a positive case identified.

• Campus Administrators will not be required to track close contacts.

• Any asymptomatic individual (except those who have tested positive) may remain at school as long as they are asymptomatic.

Testing Availability

• Testing sites are located at specified district sites and can be found on the COVID-19 district webpage.

• All sites will accept insurance, medicaid, and self-pay.

• Site will be updated whenever vaccines are available.
