The Mizzou Homecoming Food Drive happens next week! We will begin collecting canned and shelf stable food items on Tuesday the 3rd and the bins will be picked up by the Food Bank on Friday the 6th. You are also able to make monetary donations using the QR code on the flyer below. If you are making a monetary donation and there is a spot to include our school please be sure to select Ridgeway. The winner of the food drive will receive a Mizzou spirit parade including athletes, golden girls and Truman the Tiger. Ridgeway was victorious last year - take a moment to watch the video of the parade and celebration! We appreciate any and all donations you’re able to make, going to a fantastic cause. Have a great weekend!
Unit Notes
Unit A
Unit A has been very busy this week! Here are a few things we worked on this week.
Literacy:
• Reading: Great reading habits (reading quietly to self, picking just right books & taking care of books)
• Writing: We began drawing and writing about a specific topic and adding details to our pictures.
Math:
• Continued to practice using math tools during station time.
• Working collaboratively with partners to be a learner and problem solver.
Second steps:
• We worked on ways to be a learner (Focusing attention, ears listening, body still, voice off.)
• Look for at-home practice in your child’s Friday folder.
Unit B
We made it through our first full week of school and are so excited to have this group of enthusiastic learners!
In order to determine each child’s needs, we have been doing a lot of assessments. Many of these assessments require students to have their own set of headphones. We have several who do not have their own and have been borrowing them from the classroom, but we only have a few working spares.
Curriculum Updates
*Second Step: We reviewed the skills for learning (be assertive, listen, focus attention, and use self-talk) and how to identify feelings. Ask your child what these skills look like in the classroom.
*Writing: We are learning how to write complete sentences, including a subject and a predicate. We also have looked at various types of sentences.
*Math classes are getting into routines and beginning Unit 1. Ms. Malloy’s and Ms. McCoy’s are working on number lines and also learning how to identify coins. Mrs. Basham’s and Mrs. Rice’s classes are learning how to use the number grid to find the difference between two numbers.

From the Media Center
In the Media Center this year, your child will get to do makerspace activities (focusing on problem solving and design thinking), learn iPad skills, hear great stories, and check out awesome books.
This week students were able to select their first library books of the year! Unit A and B students are allowed to check out 2 books at a time and keep them for one week. Unit C students do not have a checkout limit (within reason 😊)
Here is the day your child will come to the Library Media Center to check
out books and books will be due the same day the following week:
Monday: Mrs. Triplett, Ms. McCoy, Mr. Gray
Tuesday: Mrs. Basham
Wednesday: Ms. Blades, Mrs. Sandstedt
Thursday: Mrs. Mincke, Mrs. Rice
Friday: Mrs. Horn, Ms. Malloy, Mr. White
Part of learning to be a reader is discovering good books and how to take care of them. In class, we have talked about how to handle library books with care and keep them away from pets, food, liquids, etc. We also talked about how to find just the right book. As students are learning this, you may find they bring home a book that is too hard, or too easy, or that doesn’t keep their interest. That is ok-they are learning what type of books are good for them! We also know as they are learning to take care of books, accidents might happen. If a book is damaged or lost you will be asked to cover the replacement cost. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please email me at rmunsterman@cpsk12.org.

Visitor Management System
Columbia Public Schools has a Visitor Management System in all our buildings. The goal of the Visitor Management System is to welcome our guests while also promoting the safety and security of scholars, teachers and staff.
During school hours, this system requires all visitors, contractors, and volunteers to scan or manually enter their state issued IDs to gain entrance. Visitors will then receive a visitor’s tag that identifies them as guest in our buildings. A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools simply to drop off an item in the office or pick up paperwork.
This is a new system for both visitors/volunteers and us as school staff. Please be patient as we work through these new procedures.
