NEWS FROM THE PANTHER DEN
WEEK 29 EDITION
WEEK 29 REFLECTION
This past week, we had the honor of inducting a new class of students into the National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society. These are students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Their journey to this achievement wasn’t easy. It required discipline, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards, even when the work was hard.
In many ways, their dedication reflects what many witnessed this past weekend on the NCAA wrestling mat. In a stunning heavyweight upset, Oklahoma State’s Wyatt Hendrickson, an officer in the Air Force, defeated Gable Steveson, an Olympic gold medalist and two-time NCAA champion. Steveson was the heavy favorite—undefeated, dominant, and nearly untouchable. But Hendrickson stepped onto that mat not just with skill, but with something even more powerful: honor. What happened next turned into the biggest upset in NCAA wrestling history.
Honor in sports and in the classroom means competing with integrity, respecting the process, and giving everything you have, no matter the odds. Hendrickson didn’t win by luck—he won because he wrestled with grit, discipline, and an unshakable belief in his preparation. He honored his opponent by pushing himself to the absolute limit and proving that victory is about more than just talent. It is about heart.
As we push through the final stretch before spring break, this lesson applies to all of us. It's easy to feel exhausted, to want to take shortcuts, to think, "I just need to get through these next two weeks." But real honor isn’t about just making it to the end. It is about how we finish.
Our NHS inductees didn’t earn their recognition by coasting through easy moments; they earned it by persevering through the tough ones. Hendrickson didn’t earn his victory by stepping onto the mat. He earned it by wrestling to the very last second, against the best there is. For all of us, the next few weeks are our chance to do the same: to show up, to work hard, and to finish this stretch with pride, knowing we gave our best effort.....to the very last bell.
In the end, honor isn’t just about what we achieve. It is about how we carry ourselves along the way. Let’s finish these next two weeks with strength and honor. #nocknation
