Family Newsletter April

Hello Huskies,
So we have started the testing and are doing great. Your students are taking it seriously and showing up ready to prove their abilities. Thank you, parents! It makes a huge difference when we all work together.
April is the time of year that we look toward promotion. Please understand, in today's world, education is the most important determining factor in the success of our young citizens. Attendance is critical, if your student is not in class, they are not progressing. Seat time is critical for learning. If your child does not master the grade level standards, they will enter the next grade that far behind. Each year it gets more difficult, and passing a student without the required prerequisite skills does not help them in the future.
Safford will be sending out letters to Middle School students guardians if they are not passing the required classes. To move from 6th to 7th, you must pass ELA and Math. To move from 7th to 8th, you must pass ELA, Math and either Science or Social Studies. To move from 8th to High School you must pass all core classes - ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies. If your student does not pass the required classes, they can petition their grade level team of teachers. We will have a meeting to discuss if the student has demonstrated that they did their best work. We understand that students with IEPS and our English Language Learners have extenuating situations and will take that into account. There is still time to get the grades up to a passing level.
Students who do not pass can take Summer School, but understand, it is not guaranteed that they will pas the class. There will be a strict attendance policy - you cannot miss more than 2 days. Also, there will be a pre and post test that students must pass in order to earn promotion to the next grade. There is a special state requirement for 3rd Grade. If the 3rd grade student does not pass their standardized testing at the state cut off for proficiency, they may be held back. If your student is identified as a "MOWR" student, they will need to attend and pass the state MOWR class. You will be notified as soon as we hear if this applicable to any students here at Safford.
We have lots of exciting events coming up! Bookfair, Car Show, Ballet Folklorico Fundraiser, Science Olympiad State Competition, Step Fundraiser, 21st Century Showcase and more! Keep you eyes and ear open.
