4-H Project Idea Corner
House Plants
Did you know that house plants make for a great 4-H fair project? Your club can get together this winter, and propagate plants, giving them plenty of time to get established. For more guidance, check out our "Guide to Growing Houseplants" here and for information on propagation, click here.
...AND a fun way to house your indoor plants is to upcycle tin cans by using the decoupage technique to create really unique and fun planters!
Decoupage Tin Can House Planters
Supplies:
- Tin cans (any size)
- Decorative napkins
- Mod Podge
- Acrylic Paint
- Foam brush or paintbrush
- Hammer and Nail
Instructions:
- Clean and prepare tin can by removing paper and soak in hot water to remove glue
- Paint the tin cans, a white base is a good start.
- Apply napkins with mod podge, make sure you separate all the plies of the napkin to isolate only the printed layer. Trim the napkin to match the size of the tin can. Apply thin layer of mod podge using foam brush about 2 inches at a time and place napkin gently down. To remove air bubbles, use a small piece of food wrap to press the napkin down into the grooves of the can. if your napkin overlaps at the end, use a paintbrush with water to dab the napkin along the edge, then simply tear away the excess piece.
- Seal the decoupage cans (optional) You can add a topcoat of mod podge for more durability.
- (Optional) use hammer and nails to poke a few small drainage holes in the bottom of the can to allow water drainage from the house plant.
