From October 23 through October 31 J. R. Fugett Middle School will celebrate National Red
Ribbon Week. This week marks the occasion when schools across the country focus their
attention on drug use and prevention among school-aged children. This year’s national Red
Ribbon Week theme is “Life Is a Movie, Film Drug Free.” National Red Ribbon Week began in
1988 with a Congressional Proclamation. This week is dedicated to Federal Drug Enforcement
agent, Enrique “Kiki” Camerena, who was killed by drug traffickers in 1985 because he was
close to uncovering their identities. The people in Kiki’s hometown of Calexico, California hung
red ribbons in his memory to bring attention to the impact that drugs have on all of us. National
Red Ribbon Week has become a symbol for a drug-free society. Over 100,000 schools and
organizations nationwide celebrate it with approximately 80 million adults and children
participating annually in the event.
Here are some tips on what parents and guardians can do to help their children make healthy,
drug-free choices: 1.) Keep the communication open between you and your children by creating
an atmosphere at home where your child feels free to talk to you when he or she has a problem,
2.) Educate yourself on the latest information on tobacco, e-cigarettes, alcohol, and other illicit
drugs and how they can destroy your community and family, 3.) Be a positive role model by
maintaining healthy habits in your everyday life, 4.) Help build your child’s self-esteem by
spending time together and letting your child know that your love is constant, and 5.) Praise your
child’s achievements often!!!! Here are a few websites containing helpful information for
parents: www.nida.nih.gov and www.samhsa.gov.

6th Grade Intramural Soccer
Dear Students and Parents, Welcome to 6th Grade Intramural Soccer! We are looking forward to a great few weeks with you! Co-ed intramurals will be fun and a great learning experience. We will be learning proper stretching and training techniques, running drills, skill drills, positioning, scrimmaging, sportsmanship, and teamwork! We will be holding practice after school from 2:15 – 4:00 pm according to the below schedule.
We will be playing either at the fields on Paoli Pike or the Price Fields across Ellis Lane. Please make sure that your ride is here promptly! You should be dressed properly for practice: It will be getting VERY cold outside, wear layers! I would also recommend wearing a thin pair of gloves! Shin guards and cleats are not mandatory, but are recommended! Bring a SNACK to eat before we begin. Good snack ideas include pretzels, a peanut butter sandwich, fruit, juice, etc. You should also bring bottled water as we do a lot of running! Water will not be provided by the school. Please keep in mind the district’s activity fee. This will need to be paid by all students participating in 6th grade soccer. Please see the district website on how to pay the activity fee. Coaches will not accept any activity fees!
As this is 6th grade soccer, sport’s physicals are not necessary. Students will receive a blue card on the first day of practice where you can write emergency information and contact information. There is no FAMILY ID signups for 6th grade soccer. As long as the activity fee is paid and you bring the blue emergency card, which will be given out, students can come to the first practice. Please get changed in the locker room and leave your things in the locker room while we play. Do not put on your cleats until you’re outside! We’ll meet outside the cafeteria at 2:30 pm each day. Let’s have fun! The schedule is below. Please listen to the announcements for any changes due to inclement weather!
Pick up at the end of practice is at the front of Fugett. You do not have to come to practice every day. If you cannot make it to a practice, we’ll see you at the next one!
6th Grade Soccer Intramurals 2024 Schedule All practices will run from 2:15pm – 4:00pm. Students must be picked up in front of Fugett by 4:00 pm every day. If you cannot be picked up on time do not come to practice that day!
