Growth and Progress
As a sports fan, I like statistics. And there can be a lot of data to sift through when looking at school performance. So, allow me to nerd out for a second and share a few things that I am proud of about our recent achievement levels. The state publishes the percentage of students that are on track for college-level learning without the need for remedial classes, as based on student performance on standardized tests in three tested areas, ELA, Math, and Science. Our performance grew in each of these subjects from 22-23 to 23-24. English Language Arts proficiency is up 7%, Math is up 12%, and Science is up a substantial 18%. Our scores are also exceeding the state averages in English by 11%, in Math by 3% and in Science by 15%.
I also know we still have the ability to grow, I mean…I sign off each week with “better every day” so growth is a process that’s always on my mind! To keep this energy, I also track our performance against a list of similar schools as ranked by an educational resource called Hanover Research. Looking at our performance as compared to the seven other Washington high schools most like us is an insightful exercise. This data shows me that our ELA performance falls right in the middle of this comparative list, and while our Math and Science performance is trending up, we fall just below the median scores as compared to our peers. These statistics help me structure the direction and support I need to give to our teachers and students as we strive to become our best selves.
Getting better, every day. - Jake

A Message from Mr. Johnson
Hi Seniors,
I know many of you are in the thick of college applications, or at least thinking about applying. If you haven't already, it's a great time to start looking at colleges that may be right for you. CommonApp is an amazing resource where you can apply to multiple colleges at once. If you need help with college applications, reviewing essays, resumes, or just any questions about post high school life, Dr. Chase and I will be doing "Beyond HS Assistance" during the next Wednesday WIN time.
P.S. During this year, you will feel many emotions ranging from high stress to extreme joy. Don't forget to stop, take a breath, and enjoy the moment. You are all capable of doing great things!
-Mr. Johnson

U.S. Service Academy
The Office of Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland is hosting a West Point Forum for high school students interested in attending a U.S. Service Academy. It is a great first step for students to make the connection to both a West Point recruiter, and to our Congressional Office so they can have a strong start to the application process for nomination to a U.S. Service Academy. This is an amazing opportunity sentinels, make sure to take a moment to find out additional information.
