PRINCIPAL’S PĀNUI
Thank you to our students and whanau for what has been a wonderful term of learning, it has been great to see the students showing Ambition in their learning and the sense of pride and self-confidence that they have from seeing themselves making progress from the great attitude and effort that they are putting into their learning. It has been a long term scattered with short weeks for public holidays, but jam packed with learning and great opportuntities from start to finish.
The Year 7-8 students have had a great term at Tech, they were very proud to show me the amazing gutterboards that they have made for the school, personalised with our houses, values and logos. They are amazing and a very special new addition to the PE Shed.
Last Friday I attended the Year 5-8 EPA combined schools athletics event at Eltham Primary, it was a fanastic day. Very well organised by the team at Eltham. The maanakitanga from Eltham right from the start of the day being welcomed and made to feel at home by their student leadership team set a great atmosphere that continued through the day. I took the long jump and throughout the day was impressed by the high level of participation, with every student giving it a go, and the support and encouragement amongst the students. After every session I had students from the various come and thank me off their own back, it was great to see the positive interaction amongst the students and them wanting to introduce me to the new friends that they had made over the day.
At the end of each term we will have a week long focus on a particular subject area. This enables students to enjoy learning about ideas that don't fit within the inquiry or topic focus that we have running throughout the term. This week is Science Week, based around 'Garden Science', students learn within their house teams and rotate around the teachers who have prepared various lessons from the Science Strands, Making Sense of the Living World, Physical World, Material World and Planet Earth and Beyond. It is always a special moment when we see students working in their House Teams. The Tuakana-Teina relationships between our older and younger children really shine and highlight the special culture of a rural school environment in fostering both caring, supportive relationships and building leadership capacity amongst our senior students. Each day has started with some whole school singing, followed by some Minute to Win It house challenges, before heading off to their Science Sessions. There has been a huge range of learning opportunities from learning about worms and caring for them, including each child being given their own 'worm' to take care of for the week, learning about the impact of different sprays and building their own composts, learning about the Water Cycle and Plant Adaptation, the Seasons, Day-and-Night and how these cycles impact growing. As you can see it has been a great week of learning!
We start next term with our Pembroke Anzac service on Tuesday 30th at 2pm at the Pembroke Hall. This was a lovely service hosted by our students last year and a special time honoring the men from our Pembroke area who served in the World and other wars.
We are looking forward to another great term of learning in Term 2 and wish you all a restful and fun holiday with your whanau.

Classroom Renovations Over the Holidays
It will be another busy time over the holidays with the last of our internal renovations being done. We are looking forward to old wall linings being replaced and paint work in the classrooms that will help modernise our spaces and give us a cohesive look throughout the school. We have come a long way in a few short years and it is great to see our students enjoying the changes that have been made to our school environment.
Happiness Highlights
It feels like Term One of 2024 has been crammed full of lots of fun and exciting opportunities for our tamariki. The last weeks of the term have been more of the same and once again it's hard to condense all the things that have been happening in to a small snippet for the newsletter. First our Year 8 students enjoyed an afternoon at Wai o Rua with the other year 8's from Eltham and
Avon Primary's for a pool and pizza party. It was wonderful to hear some of our senior students had made the most of this opportunity and started to make some new connections with the seniors from the other schools, when they head off to high school next year it could make a world of difference to recognise a few more friendly faces.
The school was lucky enough to be visited by the Wood is Good program, students got to learn a little about what a career in forestry would look like and even got to check out a logging truck. For the second year the school headed to Hollard gardens for our easter picnic. The weather was not kind to us this year but the children didn't let the rain stop their fun and we all still got to do the activities we had planned and find a sheltered spot to have our picnics before we headed back to school.
The junior school enjoyed the annual athletics day at Ngaere School with the other schools in our rural cluster. The day is a mixture of traditional athletics day events like long jump and a few fun activities like the awesome obstacle course Ngaere had set up this year. It was a fun day mixing with all the other schools and watching our Pembroke students give everything a go.
It feels fitting that after such a busy first term we would end it with a week that is no different. Science week took us out of our normal learning routine with our own class and gave us a whole week of learning with the whole school. This is one of the ways we embrace the opportunities of being a smaller school, we broke into our house teams and each house group had two lessons with each teacher throughout the week where the students can make the most of learning alongside children of all ages. This week was a chance to dig deeper into the science behind all that we have been busy doing in our school gardens lately. We also took the opportunity to throw in a bunch of minute to win it challenges every morning so each house could make a last minute dash for points before the winning house was announced for the term. Judging by the enthusiasm and excitement during these challenges they were absolutely a hit!
Sheltering from the rain.

All masked up and ready to learn during science week.

In the Spotlight
Weet-Bix Tryathlon
An enthusiastic bunch of Pembroke students headed to the Weet-Bix Tryathlon this year. It was wonderful to see some of our students out there giving it their all and having a great time while they were at it. It was also heartwarming to watch our tamariki cheering each other on and helping each other out on the day, this kindness and sense of community that our children take with them out into the wider world is something we are incredibly proud of. The day ended on a high note with Pembroke School being selected for one of the random spot prizes for school teams and coming back with a $300 voucher for sports equipment!
Winning house for Term One
This term the children have been working hard to earn house points and take out the coveted title of top house of the term. There have been house sports twice a week where the children can earn points for their house by turning up and participating and being a great team player as well as by winning the game. Teachers will also award house points to children they notice around the school showing our school values or going above and beyond what we would expect of them. The competition has been lively and it is wonderful to see everyone with so much team spirit. Maui team had a healthy lead for a large part of the term but in the final week the other houses got very close to catching up. But at the end of the day Maui clung on to their lead and took out top house for the term. The children from Maui got to celebrate with a pizza lunch together with their house team.
Head Student Shout Out
Eltham Athletics
On April 5th 2024 the year 8, 7, 6 and 5's went to Eltham primary for athletics. After the roll we hopped on a bus where we drove to Eltham primary. They hosted athletics and teachers and principals hosted the activities. The activities were shot put, discus, sprints, relays, high jump, long jump. In between our activities we would ear and play on the playground. After all the activities we ate lunch with Avon and Eltham. After eating lunch we grabbed our stuff and hoped into the bus. We all loved our time there and we can't wait to come together with other schools again at our next event.
Bryah and Ryder.
Weet-bix Tryathlon
You should definitely come to Weet-bix Tryathlon to swim, bike and run and get a medal once you finish your race. There are races to suit each different age group with the distances getting longer the older you get. Izzy loved all the free food that you could have on the day to keep you fuelled before and after the race. When we were lining up for our races it was really crammed with all the kids. I really enjoyed the bike riding. We couldn't believe it when the school won a prize and we were so so excited.
Oliver and Izzy.
